‘The Better Annie’

Season 10, Episode 16 -  Aired March 8, 2023

When Adam finally introduces his family to Carmen, a past incident with Erica leads to a showdown. Meanwhile, Pop-Pop is less than thrilled when he's told he can move back to his apartment.

Quote from Geoff

Adult Adam: [v.o.] While my sister was still stuck in the past, Pop-Pop was looking toward a future in his old apartment.
Geoff: Is this the right place? Everything is sorta yellow and sad.
Pop-Pop: The bums patched the hole in my floor. [scoffs] And the fridge is working.
Geoff: Isn't that a good thing?
Pop-Pop: Feh! My old place was distinctive. How am I supposed to think if nothing's dripping on me?
Geoff: Well, if it makes you feel better, this place still makes me bummed out that this is how we treat our elderly.
Pop-Pop: You call those insurance asswipes and tell them they can stick that check up their keisters. I'm not falling for their con.

Quote from Geoff

Geoff: Con? Now, what's really going on here?
Pop-Pop: Fine. You want to know what's going on, friend of my granddaughter?
Geoff: Husband. But, yeah.
Pop-Pop: It's too quiet. There's nobody here, and it's just gonna be me and the sound of my own horrible thoughts.
Geoff: Are you saying that you're gonna miss living at the Goldbergs'?
Pop-Pop: Way to go, Dick Tracy. You solved it.
Geoff: Well, why don't you just tell Beverly that you want to stay?
Pop-Pop: Please, they almost threw a parade when they heard I was leaving.
Geoff: I'm sure if you just explain...
Pop-Pop: Explain nothing. I don't want to grovel like a yutz.

Quote from Erica

Carmen: [hushed] I am so, so sorry if you're still hurt by something you think I did all those years ago.
Erica: [hushed] Something I think you did?
Carmen: Okay, but I have no recollection of what you're describing, and I would love to just move on and be friends.
Erica: There's no way you don't remember.
Adam: [hushed] The important thing to note is that she's apologizing. Let's not get lost in the blurry specifics.
Erica: I don't accept her empty apology.
Adam: She's speaking in a psychotic whisper, but I think I heard the words, "I accept her apology".
Erica: You did not.
Carmen: Maybe this was a bad time. I don't want to disturb the baby, who is beautiful. By the way, she looks just like you.
Erica: Why, because she's bald?

Quote from Adam

Adult Adam: [v.o.] And after that awkward exchange, Pop-Pop kept doing everything Geoff taught him... in his own way.
Virginia Kremp: Oh, hello, Ben. I'm just returning Beverly's casserole dish, if you wouldn't mind giving it to her.
Pop-Pop: Sure. In fact, I got something for you, too.
Virginia Kremp: Oh. My missing paper.
Pop-Pop: I already read it cover to cover on the crapper, so now it's yours again.
Virginia Kremp: Oh! [laughs] And, look, now it's touching my hands.
Pop-Pop: Mm-hmm.

Quote from Barry

Pop-Pop: Made you a little study snack.
Barry: Whoa. Thanks, Pop-Pop. Is that a peeled lemon?
Pop-Pop: Oh, you betcha. This is brain food.
Barry: And is that just a tub of margarine?
Pop-Pop: Oh, look who's too good to put a butter substitute on a lemon. Now who's your number-one grandad? [smiles]
Barry: Why do you keep doing that with your face?

Quote from Erica

Adam: What's this?
Erica: You wanted to fix our little feud. Well, I found a way.
Adam: You decided to see a therapist about your rage issues and this is your giant prescription?
Carmen: This is for an open audition for Annie at a small theater.
Erica: We're both gonna audition and everyone's gonna finally see who deserves that part.
Adam: Erica, stop. You're a mother now.
Erica: And I'm gonna teach my daughter how to right a wrong.

Quote from Erica

Carmen: It's fine. Maybe it's time to remind you why you didn't get that part then... or now.
Erica: Great.
Carmen: It is great.
Erica: The greatest.
Carmen: Maybe something even greater than that.
Erica: What could be greater than the greatest?
Carmen: I'm glad you asked. It's me.
Erica: Damn it, that was good.
Carmen: Good enough that you don't want to do this anymore?
Erica: Oh, no. In two days, we'll see how good you really are on that stage outside of Smyrna, Delaware. And it specifically says, don't park at the church across the street, so don't.
Carmen: I won't.
Erica: Well, you're not getting my spot. Because besides the part of Annie, I'm getting that, too.

Quote from Beverly

Adult Adam: [v.o.] Meanwhile, Pop-Pop was still trying to be nice, even though he didn't know how the vacuum worked.
Barry: What's he doing?
Beverly: I think he thinks he's vacuuming. But he doesn't realize he has to turn it on.
Barry: This looks bad.

Quote from Barry

Adult Adam: [v.o.] With that, Dr. Barry was reporting to the den.
Barry: Hey, respected elder. Do you know where you are right now?
Pop-Pop: Of course I do. A hell of my own making.
Barry: And how many fingers am I holding up?
Pop-Pop: I'll hold up one if you don't get out of my face.
Barry: Interesting answer. Final question... what day is it?
Pop-Pop: How the hell would I know that? Monday, Thursday... they're all exactly the same to me.
Barry: It's worse than I thought.
Pop-Pop: Take off those shirt and pants. I'll wash 'em in the sink.
Barry: Generous offer, I'm just gonna run over here real quick, okay?
Pop-Pop: Well, I'll wash your pants or anyone else's.

Quote from Barry

Beverly: So?
Barry: Your instincts were right. His brain is mush.
Beverly: Oh, God. We can't let him move out now.
Barry: [exhales sharply] Save your strength. You'll need it to bathe and carry Pop-Pop. I'm sorry.
