‘A Ditch in Time’

Season 3, Episode 12 -  Aired December 20, 1984

Diane warns Sam not to go out with her friend Amanda (Carol Kane), whom she met at Goldenbrook.

Quote from Norm

Diane: Get out!
Cliff: Wait a minute here, Diane. Sam's a very close personal friend. He's in a crisis, now, and I don't think-
Diane: OK, have a couple of beers on me.
[After Diane hands Cliff some money, he instantly leaves. Norm waits around until Diane offers him some money as well.]
Norm: Sammy, you know where to find us if you need any help.

Quote from Norm

Coach: You ought to have Sam down there, Norm.
Norm: Sam's here, right next to Ernie.
Coach: Oh, thank you, Norm.
Cliff: Oh, it looks like my buddy's got all the bases covered here. Where's my name?
Norm: What?
Cliff: Clifford. Where's Clifford?
Norm: Come on, name a kid Cliff? [chuckles] Have a heart, will you?
Cliff: Look, Normie, you got every other male name down there except Zeus.
Norm: Zeus? I like that, Zeus. Zeus.

Quote from Sam

Amanda: I can't believe you did this to me, Sam.
Sam: I'm sorry, Amanda. I know it was stupid and cruel and I could have handled it better. I guess I could have pretended to be sick for a few days first.

Quote from Sam

Amanda: You don't have to apologize, Sam. I do. I put you in a terrible spot.
Diane: Amanda, don't despair. Just when my life seemed to be its darkest, I met Frasier Crane, and learned love doesn't have to hurt you.
Sam: Yeah, you can sleep right through it.

Quote from Diane

Amanda: I made a lot of mistakes here, Sam. And I have a history of being wrong about men. But I know it's different this time with you. No matter what happens, I'll never stop loving you. Till the day I die, you'll always be mine.
Sam: Well, this is going pretty well, wouldn't you say?
Diane: Amanda, I didn't want to say this but I have to tell you something now that will change the way you feel about Sam.
Amanda: Nothing you could ever say will change the way I feel about him.
Diane: Except this.
Amanda: Except nothing. No matter what you ever do, no matter where you ever go, I'll never get over you.
Diane: Amanda, do you remember the man I used to talk about in group therapy?
Amanda: Ralph?
Diane: This is Ralph.
Amanda: Sam is Ralph?
Diane: That's right. The man to whom you just pledged your undying love is Ralph.
Amanda: Well, he can't hold me to that. If they won't let me sign contracts or have a credit card or vote, then I am not responsible for hysterical hogwash that I babbled in the backroom of a bar. Thank you for saving me, Diane. Sam, I will think of you... every time I see something scurry under the sink.

Quote from Coach

Amanda: White wine, please.
Coach: White wine.
Sam: Coach, I'll handle this one. I hope this isn't going to embarrass you too much, but I just have to tell you you have the most beautiful eyes that I have ever seen.
Coach: Well, I kinda get flustered, but it's nice to hear.

Quote from Carla

Sam: Carla, tell me what you think of this new cologne of mine? What do you think?
Carla: [sniffs] I like it. When will I be able to see again?
Sam: Thank you very much, Carla.
Sam: We have some customers over there waiting for you.
Carla: Right away. Does someone want lead me to them, please?

Quote from Sam

Sam: So you two know each other, huh?
Diane: Nothing gets by this guy. Sam, this is my friend Amanda Boyer. Amanda, this is my friend, Sam Malone.
Sam: You're gonna have to excuse us here, I think we're on our way out to dinner.
Amanda: [to Diane] Actually, I came by to see you. You wanna have lunch sometime?
Diane: Lunch sometime- Are you two going out together?
Sam: Well, you're pretty sharp yourself there, Diane.

Quote from Diane

Diane: So you didn't make any plans to see each other again?
Sam: Well, you know, I like it when a woman is hot for me, but this is ridiculous. It's none of your business, but if you must know, yeah, I was thinking about calling her again.
Diane: Oh, no. I wish Frasier weren't at that nerve-ending symposium. Well, I guess I have to tell you the truth. Amanda and I became friends... at a place.
Sam: Ooh, that's pretty fascinating. You're going to have to fill me in on that later.
Diane: The place was Goldenbrook.
Sam: The booby hatch? Oh, no, she looked so normal. What, were you guys cellmates or something?
Diane: There are no cells at Goldenbrook. I was there of my own volition as were a lot of other normal people who just needed a little time to rest and sort out their feelings under constant psychiatric supervision.

Quote from Carla

Diane: Oh, I shouldn't even be talking to you. Maybe I'm being alarmist. She wouldn't be out if she still had problems.
Carla: You're out.
