‘Everybody Hates the Car’

Season 4, Episode 18 -  Aired March 27, 2009

When Chris gets his driver's license, he sets out to buy his first car. Meanwhile, it seems everybody in the house is keeping a secret and uncovering someone else's.

Quote from Rochelle

Tonya: Mama, I wasn't smoking. I was going through your stuff and I found them and Daddy almost caught me, so I hid them in Chris's room so he would get in trouble instead of me.
Julius: How did you get my racing form?
Rochelle: Well, I was going through your stuff looking for my stuff.
Drew: How did you find my pen?
Julius: I thought you had my racing form.
Tonya: And how'd you find those cigarettes anyway?
Chris: Cause you put them in my drawer.
Rochelle: Mmm. [to Tonya] You see, this is your fault. You were in there doing something that you ain't had no business doing. And the next thing you know, nobody's business is everybody's business.
Tonya: Are you gonna put me on punishment?
Rochelle: Is that your business? No! You'll find out what happens to you when it happens to you. Now go upstairs.

Quote from Chris

Adult Chris: [v.o.] When I was 16, I crossed a major milestone for teenagers. I finally got my driver's license. The difference between taking the bus and being able to drive was obvious.
Chris: Hey, Tasha, I'm going down to Alby Square. You want to come?
Tasha: Are you taking the bus?
Chris: Yeah.
Tasha: No.
Adult Chris: [v.o.] Did I mention I have a two-for-one bus pass?
Man: [drives up] Hey, Tasha, I'm going down to Alby Square. You want to come?
Tasha: Yeah. I was just about to go there. Bye, Chris. See you downtown. [the man in the car laughs]

Quote from Chris

Tasha: Hey, Chris. Did I just see you driving that car?
Chris: Yeah, I'm thinking about buying it.
Tasha: Wow. You're buying a car?
Chris: Yeah.
Tasha: Look at you. Well, make sure I get a ride. Maybe we can go shopping.
Chris: All right.
Adult Chris: [v.o.] And you could spend the rest of your money on her.

Quote from Drew

Adult Chris: [v.o.] While I was checking out my new ride, Drew was checking out his new pen.
Drew: Now you have clothes now you don't.
Michael: Drew. Let me borrow that pen.
Drew: Huh?
Michael: Let me borrow your pen.
Drew: Oh, uh, this pen doesn't work. I'll go get you one.
Adult Chris: [v.o.] That's not suspicious at all.

Quote from Julius

Drew: Hey, Dad. You got a pen?
Julius: Uh... What do you need a pen for?
Drew: For Uncle Michael.
Julius: Oh. No.
Drew: What are you doing?
Julius: Nothing.
Adult Chris: [v.o.] Nothing he wants you to know about.
Julius: Have you seen my sports magazine?
Drew: No.

Quote from Julius

Julius: What are you doing in here?
Tonya: I was playing.
Julius: Play somewhere else.
Adult Chris: [v.o.] Go play with matches.

Quote from Adult Chris

Adult Chris: [v.o.] Sidekicks are always ready to go at a moment's notice. They're never aware of all the preparation the hero has to go through.
Indian Sidekick: Kemo sabe, people in that town in big trouble. We go now.
Masked Cowboy: Whoa, whoa. Slow down, my eager Indian friend. I need to get my guns, shine my boots, feed my horse, polish my spurs, get some bullets, light a fire, make some coffee, kiss a girl...
Adult Chris: [v.o.] And round up the rest of the Village People.

Quote from Chris

Chris: I don't know how long it's gonna be before I can even afford to start it up. Plus, the price of gas is insane right now. It's, like, 85 cents a gallon.
Adult Chris: [v.o.] Now it's 85 cents a drop.
Greg: Well, whenever you're ready I'll be ready.
Chris: [to himself] What's his issue?

Quote from Adult Chris

Adult Chris: [v.o.] I was finally ready to drive my car, and it was one of the happiest days of my life. [a bird lands on Chris's shoulder] Say hello to Uncle Remus for me.

Quote from Adult Chris

Adult Chris: [v.o.] While Greg was ready to drive like Jeff Gordon, I was still riding the bus like Rosa Parks.
Greg: Dude, where's our car?
Adult Chris: [v.o.] That sounds like the title of a movie.
Chris: Oh. I couldn't drive it. Someone stole my tires last night.
Greg: Oh, man, I think I'm gonna hyperventilate. So, did you call the cops?
Adult Chris: [v.o.] When has that ever worked for Black people?
