‘Everybody Hates Malvo’

Season 2, Episode 5 -  Aired October 30, 2006

When Chris is held at gun point while looking after Doc's store, he is too scared to reveal the identity of the robber. Meanwhile, Julius gets the family a Betamax.

Quote from Julius

Rochelle: You need to apologize.
Julius: For what? I didn't tape over her show.
Rochelle: You are acting like a child.
Julius: Am not.
Rochelle: Are too.
Julius: Am not.
Rochelle: You are too.
Julius: You can't jump to her defense when she's wrong! If she was right, I'd understand.
Rochelle: [sighs] Julius, that is not what I am trying to say.
Julius: Well, what are you trying to say?
Rochelle: Well, if you don't know then forget it!
Julius: Whoa, whoa, wait. You can't be mad! I'm supposed to be mad! Rochelle! [door slams]
Adult Chris: [v.o.] Mama wins again.

Quote from Adult Chris

Adult Chris: [v.o.] I couldn't pick-out a mug shot, because I didn't want to get shot.
Police Officer: [to Doc] We'll do another canvas, I'll let you know if we find anything.
Adult Chris: [v.o.] No, they won't.

Quote from Chris

Doc: Chris, are you lying to me?
Chris: No, why would I need to lie?
Doc: I don't know. But every time I ask you a question, you're looking east and west like you're waiting for a train. Look, Chris, if you in trouble, it's okay to ask for help.
Chris: I'm not in trouble.
Doc: Then can you look me in the eye and tell me you don't know who robbed my store?
Adult Chris: [v.o.] If I lied again, Doc would never trust me.
Chris: No.
Doc: Okay.
Chris: It's okay?
Doc: No! You're fired, Chris.
Adult Chris: [v.o.] "The truth shall set you free, all right?" Free to find another job!

Quote from Chris

Chris: Hey, Dad.
Julius: My man. How's work going?
Chris: You know, that's what I wanted to talk you about.
Julius: You know, I'm really proud of you for keeping that job, son. It took a lot of courage for you to walk back in that store.
Chris: Thanks.
Julius: Do they sell Soap Opera Digest at your job?
Chris: Yeah.
Julius: When you go to work tomorrow, pick me up a copy. [Chris walks away] Is there something else you want to talk to me about?
Chris: No, it's all right. Forget about it.
Adult Chris: [v.o.] My father being proud of me meant more than anything. Except being shot by Malvo.

Quote from Chris

Adult Chris: [v.o.] I figured it'd be easier to take a beating from Malvo than to tell my dad I'd lost my job.
Chris: Can I talk to you for a minute?
Malvo: I don't know if you can, but you may.
Adult Chris: [v.o.] While in prison, Malvo got a PHD in comparative literature.
Chris: I was wondering if you could, you know, out of the kindness of your heart return the stuff that you stole from Doc's.
Malvo: [laughs uproariously]
Adult Chris: [v.o.] He laughed like he was watching The Jeffersons. With the original Lionel.
Chris: Forget it.
Malvo: No. No, wait, kid! Wait, wait, come here! Man, you funny man. You should be a comedian when you grow-up, kid. That was funny, man. [grabs Chris and removes his jacket]
Chris: Man, what you doin'?
Malvo: You got a wire on boy?
Chris: What? No!
Malvo: My bad, man.

Quote from Chris

Malvo: Look man, let me explain some basic economic theory to you, all right? In life, there're people who make things, and there are other people who take things. I would be a taker. But I also can be a breaker. But, never ever, a faker. You follow me?
Chris: Not really.
Malvo: Okay, well, let me explain another economic theory. The stuff that I stole, is mine. Beat it! But you're funny though, kid! You funny. Give it back. [laughs]

Quote from Rochelle

Rochelle: Baby? Say you sorry.
Julius: What for? I didn't do nothing to her.
Rochelle: It's not what you did. It's how you did it. Julius, since day one, she's been your little princess, and all of a sudden, you screaming at her?
Julius: I didn't scream.
Rochelle: Julius, as big as you are, you weren't even talking to me and I was scared.
Adult Chris: [v.o.] The one thing I learned about women from my father is even when you're right, you're wrong.

Quote from Doc

Chris: I'm sorry for not telling you who robbed the store. I was scared.
Doc: And you're not scared now?
Chris: I want my job back.
Doc: Well, who was it, then?
Chris: [looks around] It was Malvo.
Doc: Malvo!
Chris: Man, would you be quiet?!
Doc: Come inside, boy. Now, why didn't you say so?
Chris: Because he showed his gun to me and he threatened to kill me!
Doc: Exactly my point. That Malvo is crazier than three dogs with rabies. Don't worry, you can have your job back.
Chris: What you doing?
Doc: Calling the police.

Quote from Doc

Adult Chris: [v.o.] Since there were no witnesses to the crime, the only way to catch Malvo was to catch him in the act.
Doc: You ready?
Chris: Um... I don't know about this.
Doc: Listen, don't worry about nothing, I'll be right here. He tries anything? Hit him with this bag of quarters.

Quote from Chris

Malvo: So the money is here and he gone?
Chris: Right.
Malvo: Then you need to give up the money to Malvo.
[After Chris hands over the cash, two police officers come out and pull their weapons]
Police Officer #1: Freeze! Don't move!
Malvo: You set me up, boy!
[Malvo runs out into the street, where another police officer is waiting with his canine]
Police Officer #2: Hold it right there.
Malvo: That's right, I'm the bad guy.
Chris: Man! You didn't even have a real gun!
Malvo: It's hard to rob a gun store, man. They got guns. It's a catch-22 for Malvo.
