‘The Proposal’

Season 8, Episode 22 -  Aired May 19, 2021

Geoff tells the JTP he is ready to propose to Erica, but like any good romantic comedy, a series of miscommunications and misunderstandings threaten to derail the joyous moment.

Quote from Beverly

Beverly: Damn it, Murray! He's not proposing!
Murray: Barry?
Beverly: Geoff!
Murray: To Joanne?
Beverly: To Erica!
Murray: But Barry is?
Beverly: But Barry is what?
Murray: Proposing!
Beverly: To Erica?
Murray: To Joanne!
Beverly: Stop confusing me.
Murray: Stop confusing me!
Vic: Allow me to explain. Bill and I are famished.
Bill Lewis: It's actually gettin' kinda rude.
Beverly: Okay, can someone please tell me what the [bleep] is going on?

Quote from Adam

Adult Adam: [v.o.] With my hopes of a happy ending fading, I had no choice but to step in and set the record straight.
Adam: And those are the six standard plot devices of any romantic comedy.
Beverly: So, what you're saying is that Geoff isn't proposing because he thinks Erica doesn't want him to?
Linda Schwartz: And it was Joanne who didn't want a proposal from Barry.
Brea: And he didn't want to propose to her in the first place.
Bill Lewis: And it all started because Mur-man is a loving, yet disinterested father.
Murray: It's effortless.

Quote from Murray

Geoff: Okay, now I just need permission from Mr. Goldberg.
Murray: Not so fast. Lou...
Beverly: Murray, please.
Murray: Bevy, we're gonna share grandchildren with this man. What kinda world do you want them to live in?
Beverly: A world with melted cheese on a burger, of course, but...
Bill Lewis: Wait, what other kind of world is there?
Murray: According to him, a world where cold cheese sits lifelessly on warm meat.
Lou Schwartz: Fine. I was wrong. I just get overwhelmed at the grill, okay?
Linda Schwartz: Let it out, sweetie.
Lou Schwartz: Between the timing and the buns and all of that corn on the second rack, I panicked! I'm sorry, Murray! From the bottom of my heart, I'm sorry. [hugs Murray and sobs]
Murray: Ah. All right, uh, you got permission.

Quote from Geoff

Beverly: Great. Then let's all go find Erica and propose to her together.
Geoff: Absolutely not.
Beverly: Good idea. I'll find her myself and tell you what she says.
Geoff: Here's what gonna happen. I am going to go find Erica, and I am going to propose to her, and I'm going to do it alone.
Carla: Yowza! Erica snagged herself a man.
Johnny Atkins: And while this is really overshadowing our relationship news, I'm super pumped for you, Glenn.
Geoff: My name is Geoff Schwartz, and I'm gonna go ask the love of my life to marry me.

Quote from Murray

Beverly: Murray, are you crying?
Murray: My peanut's getting married, and... he's a great guy.
Beverly: Sometimes life exceeds your expectations.
Murray: Not sometimes. The kids, you... all the time.

Quote from Adam

Adam: So, what do you think about romcoms now?
Brea: It's a lot more like real life than I realized. Just promise me we won't have this much confusion in our relationship.
Adam: I'm never confused about how I feel about you.
Adult Adam: [v.o.] That's the thing about family. It's not just the people you're forced to share a house with. It's the people you choose to share your life with. Of course, this meant my mom's dream of planning a wedding was gonna kick into gear... but that could wait for another day. This one was about the pure happiness of everyone who was there and the excitement of what was to come. I know, I know... I don't always get every detail exactly right, but I do remember that moment... when my sister said yes as the sun set. Yep, it was 1980-something, and it was picture perfect.

Quote from Barry

Barry: Well, well, well. Look who finally showed.
Andy: We were literally 10 feet behind you.
Barry: And yet, not in time to know where I hid the ring.
Naked Rob: Definitely in this room.
Matt: Somewhere close to where you are now.
Andy: Probably under the pillow.
Barry: How?! It's like they're all Spenser: For Hires!

Quote from Barry

Beverly: What are you boys up to?
Barry: Just not hiding stuff.
Beverly: You're acting weird.
Barry: You're acting weird. Can't four grown men anxiously come to my childhood bedroom for a reason so private, it would literally blow your mind to dust?
Matt: Or just nothing. We should go.
Barry: We should, because there's no sacred baubles of great personal or monetary value hidden somewhere in this room. Now, move, move, move!

Quote from Adam

Adam: If she would have said "Erica" instead of "our child", the whole thing would have been cleared up.
Brea: What a hysterically reckless game you're playing with your loved ones' lives.
Adam: [chuckles] You get it now.

Quote from Geoff

Adult Adam: [v.o.] Meanwhile, Geoff was still ready to pop the question to Erica, but not without asking my dad first.
Geoff: Mr. Goldberg. Murray. Um, your daughter means everything to me, and if you would extend me the honor... [Barry tackles Geoff] Agh!
Murray: I thought it, and it happened.
