Season 3, Episode 16 -  Aired March 4, 2005

When a two-year-old boy finds a severed finger in the park, Monk offers to take the toddler in to temporary foster care as he works to solve the case.

Quote from Adrian Monk

Adrian Monk: I think we met his brother.
Natalie: But why would they be lying?
Adrian Monk: I don't know. Maybe... [whispers so Tommy can't hear] Maybe the real Daniel Carlyle is dead. And the mother and brother killed him.
Natalie: No, I can't believe that.
Adrian Monk: Wouldn't be the first time.

Quote from Adrian Monk

Natalie: Mr. Monk, can I ask you something? Why did you take Tommy in?
Adrian Monk: I l I Well, he needed me, and l... l... l... I thought, I thought someday, you know, I thought somehow, maybe he would...
Natalie: Love you? Oh, my gosh, look. He's separating his food.
Tommy: Me separating food. [laughs]
Natalie: Mr. Monk, look, look, look, look.
Adrian Monk: Natalie, I know what's going on. I had it all wrong. They didn't kill Daniel. Daniel's not dead. He's been kidnapped.

Quote from Adrian Monk

Abigail Carlyle: How did you know?
Natalie: We followed you. We saw you at the pay phone, and then we saw you go to the bank and make a withdrawal. You must be Daniel's brother?
Jacob Carlyle: Jacob.
Adrian Monk: Mrs. Carlyle, when did they kidnap your son?
Abigail Carlyle: Wednesday. Feels like a year ago.
Jacob Carlyle: They cut off his finger to prove that they had him and, uh, when we went to retrieve it at the park it was all roped off, and there were police everywhere.
Natalie: Yes, a young boy found his finger before you got there. That's what led us to you.
Abigail Carlyle: You found us from his finger?

Quote from Adrian Monk

Adrian Monk: What are their demands?
Abigail Carlyle: $500,000. And they said that if we went to the police they would kill Daniel. That's why we couldn't tell you the truth.
Jacob Carlyle: I'm sorry, l... I just can't stop shaking. Huh, I can't... I'm sorry.
Abigail Carlyle: Mr. Monk? You have to promise me one thing. You won't tell the police. If you do they'll kill him.
Adrian Monk: I don't know if I can promise you that.
Abigail Carlyle: Do you have children?
Adrian Monk: Yes, I have a son.
Abigail Carlyle: Well, then you know how I feel. Wouldn't you do anything for him? Wouldn't you die for him?
Adrian Monk: Yes, I would.

Quote from Adrian Monk

Abigail Carlyle: They want you to, uh, go to the YMCA on Vinton Street, and you'll find locker 42 there, and inside there'll be a note.
Jacob Carlyle: I can't do it. I'm... I'm gonna mess it up. I'm sorry. I can't do it.
Abigail Carlyle: It's all right. I'll do it.
Natalie: Mrs. Carlyle, you can't go. They're expecting a man.
Adrian Monk: She's right. We'll have to find a man. [off everyone's look] Or... Or I could do it.

Quote from Adrian Monk

Man: Hey, how you doin'?
Adrian Monk: Hi.
Man: The rowing machine's broken again.
Adrian Monk: Uh-oh.
Man: They don't fix anything around here. They don't clean anything. I mean, what do we pay our dues for? Am I right?
Adrian Monk: Right. Right. Yeah.
Man: My membership's up next week. If they don't get their act together, I'm not renewin'. I'll go to that new place up the street. How about you?
Adrian Monk: I don't know. I- Could you... Could you do me a favor and go away?
Man: What?
Adrian Monk: Just for three minutes? Really, it's a matter of life and death.
Man: Yeah, right.

Quote from Adrian Monk

Adrian Monk: [answers phone] Hello?
Julie Teeger: Mr. Monk? Everything is okay. The stain is almost out.
Adrian Monk: Thanks, Julie. I- I appreciate that.
Julie Teeger: Mr. Monk, you should see Tommy. He's so cute. He's cleaning the stain all by himself. I can tell, when he grows up, he's gonna be just like you.
Adrian Monk: Just like me?
Julie Teeger: I'll see you when you get home.

Quote from Adrian Monk

Dr. Kroger: A-A-Adrian, what what happened on that roof? A mistake like that, that's not like you.
Adrian Monk: I was distracted. Natalie's daughter called. She was babysitting Tommy.
Dr. Kroger: Wh- What- What did she say?
Adrian Monk: I don't remember.
Dr. Kroger: Oh. I think you do.
Adrian Monk: All right. She spilled some juice, and Tommy was helping to clean it up. It's funny. She said that Tommy was just like me.
Dr. Kroger: And that- And that upset you?
Adrian Monk: No. No, I was flattered. Actually, I've been thinking about calling the case worker and making it permanent.
Dr. Kroger: Well, that's a- That's a pretty big commitment, Adrian. I mean, that's probably the biggest commitment there is.
Adrian Monk: Well, I figure he could do a lot worse for a father than me. Am I right?
Dr. Kroger: Absolutely.
Adrian Monk: For example, what if he were adopted by, uh, well, you know... wolves?
Dr. Kroger: Wolves would probably eat him alive.
Adrian Monk: Which is something I would never do.
Dr. Kroger: Right. No, of course not. Adrian, I know you don't want to hear this.
Adrian Monk: I'm not giving him up.
Dr. Kroger: I'm proud of you for taking Tommy. I'm glad you did it. But in your heart of hearts, I think you know you're not ready for this.
Adrian Monk: I'm not giving him up.

Quote from Adrian Monk

Adrian Monk: So he's just like me. I- I think that's- l- l- I think that's- I think that's okay. I'm tired of apologizing for him. I'm- I'm- What, because he he he cares about putting things away and and how he looks? That's a good thing.
Natalie: But Mr. Monk, he's not even two years old.
Adrian Monk: Well, then he's in the vanguard, isn't he? He's a new breed. He's a new breed.
Natalie: Oh, my God. What if it's true?

Quote from Adrian Monk

Adrian Monk: What? What is that? Tommy, what what is that?
Tommy: Lipstick.
Adrian Monk: Lipstick. Where did you- Did you- You got that from Natalie's purse? You took that out of Natalie's purse?
Tommy: Um, no.
Adrian Monk: [kisses Tommy] [picks up the phone] Capt. Stottlemeyer, please. What? Could you- Could you have him call Adrian Monk as soon as possible? Tell him it's very important. Yes. Tell him I think I know who kidnapped Daniel Carlyle. Thank you. [to Tommy]
