‘Charlie's Buddy’

Rose falls for a man who shows up claiming to be an old friend of Charlie's from the army. Meanwhile, Blanche and Dorothy clash over a dress for a fundraiser.

Quote from Dorothy

Blanche: This dress looks sensational on me. People expect to see me in a sensational dress.
Dorothy: What do they expect to see me in, a yarmulke and a Hefty bag?

Quote from Sophia

Sophia: Wait a minute! Did she just say "live with him"?
Rose: That's right, Sophia.
Sophia: Not marry him, live with him.
All: Yes.
Sophia: Two World Wars, a Polish pope and now this. I may live to see CBS come up with a morning show yet.

Quote from Blanche

Rose: I just don't know what to do.
Dorothy: Well, frankly, Rose, I think you're just rushing things. But, I don't know. Maybe it's better to live with Buddy than to just charge full steam ahead and marry him.
Blanche: No, it isn't. This is morally wrong. It is epically offensive. It's an out and out sin.
Dorothy: Why do I feel like I just fell through the looking glass?
Rose: Blanche, how can you, of all people, say something like that?
Blanche: Well, Rose Nylund, I have never lived with a man without the benefit of marriage.
Dorothy: Excuse me, Blanche, I think what you mean is you have never lived with a man without benefit of room service.
Blanche: Being with a man is not the same thing as living with a man.
Dorothy: You're right, Blanche. Living with a man eliminates the need for an overnight bag and a stop at the drugstore.
Blanche: And the need for marriage. Family and tradition. Not to mention wedding showers, catered affairs, the bridal registry at Burdines.

Quote from Sophia

Dorothy: Well, I know what you mean, Blanche, but there's another side to this. If I had lived with Stan before we got married I could have spared us both some very painful times. And a bitter divorce.
Sophia: And possibly given birth to reasonably attractive children.

Quote from Blanche

Blanche: I mean, have you talked about financial arrangements? Now if you were getting married, you could have a prenuptial agreement. But just living together, all you can do is steal money out of his wallet while he's in the shower.

Quote from Blanche

Dorothy: Mr. Marty's? On Market Street? Where every dress is a guaranteed one of a kind original?
Blanche: If we have the same dress, Mr. Marty's gonna be left with one of a kind.

Quote from Sophia

Sophia: Hey, girls. How do you like this spiffy little number I picked up?
Blanche: Sophia, that's the same dress I got.
Sophia: Well, now you know how it should look.

Quote from Rose

Buddy: You haven't even mentioned about moving to Boston. Are you avoiding the subject?
Rose: I can't go with you, Buddy.
Buddy: But Rose-
Rose: It wouldn't be fair. Now, I've given it a lot of thought and I realize, I'm not being honest with you. Or with myself.
Buddy: Rose, how could this be? We've been so happy.
Rose: Oh, I am happy. Happy with the memories of Charlie that you rekindled. Oh! Sometimes I put those memories too far away because I'm afraid they'll be painful. It's the hardest on holidays or when I'm lying in bed, alone at night. But remembering Charlie with you is wonderful. I'm glad I met you, Buddy. But I don't love you. I'm sorry. Listen, I went to the bank and I got something for you.
Buddy: It's a gold watch.
Rose: It's Charlie's gold watch. I want you to have it.
Buddy: But this is a very expensive piece of jewelry.
Rose: Please, Buddy.

Quote from Rose

Buddy: I think I've taken enough from you and Charlie already.
Rose: What?
Buddy: Listen, I hate emotional scenes. I'm the only Irishman in Boston who avoids wakes and political rallies. So, I'm just gonna run, you understand?
Rose: But Buddy-
Buddy: I'll write. I will. No, I won't. I always say that. I never do. You take care of yourself, Rose. You're a special lady.

Quote from Rose

Rose: Good night, Charlie. I love you.
