‘Everybody Hates Funerals’

Season 1, Episode 17 -  Aired March 23, 2006

After Rochelle's father, Gene (Jimmie Walker), dies at their dinner table, Rochelle's family gathers for the funeral. Chris stands up to Rochelle's mother, Maxine (Loretta Devine), who keeps criticizing her daughter.

Quote from Rochelle

Adult Chris: [v.o.] That's my Aunt Charlotte, but we called her Grievey, because we only saw her at funerals. No birthdays, no weddings. Just funerals.
Rochelle: Girl, I haven't seen you since Cheryl's funeral. [Grievey cries] I know, I know, I know.
Maxine: Grievey, stop crying. Come on.

Quote from Rochelle

Adult Chris: [v.o.] That's Aunt Mousey. We called her that because she talked like a mouse and she only spoke when spoken directly to.
Rochelle: Hi, Aunt Mousey. How you doing?
Aunt Mousey: [quietly] Fine.

Quote from Rochelle

Adult Chris: [v.o.] At home, even though my mother seemed to be keeping it together, the house was falling apart.
Michael: Rochelle, can you change the channel?
Rochelle: Sure, no problem.
Adult Chris: [v.o.] They were treating her like she was me!
Maxine: Rochelle, you going to help me pick out this casket, or do I have to do it by myself?
Rochelle: Oh, sure, Mama, I'll help you in a minute.
Maxine: Oh, 'Chellie, get me a glass of iced tea.
Rochelle: Sure, Mama.

Quote from Rochelle

Rochelle: Damn it!
Chris: What?
[Rochelle picks up the yo-yo she almost tripped over]
Adult Chris: [v.o.] You ever had the feeling you're about to get smacked upside the head with a yo-yo?
Rochelle: Here, baby. Be more careful.
Chris: You're not mad?
Rochelle: No. Why would I be mad?

Quote from Chris

Rochelle: Here, Mama.
Maxine: Mmm. This tea tastes funny. What kind is it?
Chris: I think it's Lipton.
Maxine: Mm-mm, tastes like Nestea.
Chris: It's Lipton.
Maxine: Uch.

Quote from Chris

Chris: Hey.
Rochelle: Hey. Want a Turtle?
Adult Chris: [v.o.] My mother offering me a Turtle? In her world, that's a cry for help.
Chris: Mm, no thanks. You okay, Mom?
Rochelle: I'm fine. You sure you don't want a Turtle? [Chris hugs Rochelle] What was that for?
Chris: I just wanted to let you know that I love you.

Quote from Greg

Adult Chris: [v.o.] The only thing more crowded than a limo before the funeral is your house after the funeral.
Chris: Hey, what are you doing here?
Greg: My dad dropped me off to pay my respects.
Chris: Thanks, man. He had to go to work.
Michael: Mama! Come look! Chris has got a White friend.
Maxine: Michael, close your mouth. Stop acting like you never seen a White person before. Hi, honey. You hungry? You want something to eat?
Greg: Sure.
Maxine: Well, come on.
Mr. Harris: Want this?
Greg: No, thank you.
Risky: How about a slinky? Would you like a slinky?

Quote from Chris

Keisha: Sorry about your grandfather, Chris.
Adult Chris: [v.o.] The one good thing about losing a family member is that you get lots of sympathy.
[Chris goes in to hug Keisha]
Keisha: What are you doing?
Chris: My grandfather died.
Keisha: Just because your grandfather died doesn't mean you can go around hugging people. [hugs Drew] Sorry about your grandfather.
Adult Chris: [v.o.] At least somebody was getting some sympathy.
