‘Sick and Tired: Part 2’

Season 5, Episode 2 -  Aired September 30, 1989

After being dismissed by the doctors she visited for help, Dorothy turns to her friend, Dr. Harry Weston, to finally get to the bottom of why she feels so ill. Meanwhile, Blanche loses it as she stays up for three days to write her novel.

Quote from Sophia

Rose: Oh, Dorothy, you look terrific. Where are you going?
Dorothy: To see that specialist that Harry recommended.
Sophia: Wipe off your makeup.
Dorothy: What?
Sophia: You look too healthy. Maybe that's why they don't believe you. You don't look sick. [Blanche enters] She should go. They'd believe her.

Quote from Blanche

Dorothy: Rose, make her lie down.
Blanche: Well, I do try. I try, but I just pop right up again like one of those clowns you hit. I'll never rest. I'll never rest again. Have a good time, Dorothy. Buy me a present.

Quote from Blanche

Rose: Come on, you can sleep right here, honey.
Blanche: Tell me a story, Rose. That always puts me to sleep. It works every time. Just tell me one of your boring stories.

Quote from Dorothy

Dorothy: Dr. Chang, please.
Dr. Chang: Well, I think that you are sick. I think you have something called chronic fatigue syndrome. It's fairly recent. There are many theories, but most of us believe it's a virus. It just has not been identified yet.
Sophia: The man's a genius. By the way, I loved Flower Drum Song.
Dorothy: Doctors just kept telling me I was depressed.
Dr. Chang: Well, depression can make a person feel tired, but depression doesn't start suddenly, give you swollen glands, sore throat and all the other symptoms. Now, there are certain blood tests, which we'll do, and if those results are abnormal that combined with the exclusion of the other diseases will compose a profile that actually thousands of people fit.

Quote from Dorothy

Dorothy: So I really have something real?
Dr. Chang: I would say you most certainly do. But we should have our answers in a couple of weeks.
Dorothy: How long will it last? I mean, will it go away? Does it get worse? Does anyone die from it?
Dr. Chang: Well, no one has died from it. We don't know how long it lasts. Some people seem to recover in months, some still have it after ten years, but that happens in other diseases as well. You take multiple sclerosis. Some people have 20-year remissions, others wind up in wheelchairs. There are variations.

Quote from Dorothy

Waiter: Ladies, drinks?
Dorothy: Champagne. The best you have.
Rose: Dorothy, that's so expensive.
Blanche: Shut up, Rose.
Dorothy: This is my treat. It is a celebration.
Waiter: What are we celebrating?
Sophia: My daughter found out she has a debilitating disease.
Waiter: Oh!
Dorothy: And it has a name. I am thrilled.
Blanche: We all are.
Waiter: Well, of course. Congratulations. Champagne it is.

Quote from Dorothy

Dorothy: It's him.
Sophia: Who?
Dorothy: I can't believe it.
Blanche: I saw him first. Who is it? Where is he?
Dorothy: It's Dr. Budd, the neurologist I saw in New York. The one who told me I was just getting old and to go see a psychiatrist.
Blanche: Dorothy, don't make a scene.
Dorothy: Order without me.

Quote from Rose

Rose: Are you all right?
Dorothy: I feel better than I have felt in a long time. To my friends who made being sick a little easier because they cared.
Rose: Oh!
Blanche: This is the best champagne I've ever tasted.
Rose: It should be. It's $430 a bottle.
Dorothy: Rose, I can't afford that!
Blanche: Well, you did say the best.
