‘Country Dean’

Season 1, Episode 14 -  Aired February 9, 2022

Dean's plans to spend spring break in front of the TV are scuppered when the family visit Lillian's parents on the farm.

Quote from Dean

All: DJ! DJ! DJ! DJ! DJ!
Adult Dean: It shouldn't have mattered. It was just a childish dare. But I felt like all my previous arguments about how I was growing up was better than how they were growing up rested on me proving there was nothing they could do that I couldn't. It all came down to this moment.
[Dean backs away]
All: DJ! DJ! DJ! DJ! DJ! DJ! Aww!

Quote from Kim

Kim: Grandma, you made all this by yourself?
Lillian: Said she didn't want any help.
Bessie: I didn't think you'd have the energy to cook after a day of meddling in people's business.
Kim: And you stripped all that corn the kids shucked without breaking a nail?
Bessie: Uh-oh. We got another city gal on our hands.

Quote from Bill

Lillian: Well, sweetie, let me fix your plate.
Kim: Oh, the patriarchy's alive and well.
Bill: [to Big Jim] She only doing this to compete with her mother.
Big Jim: Don't overthink it, son. Enjoy it till it's over.
Bessie: Bill, I made those buttermilk biscuits because I know you love 'em.
Lillian: Well, you know, Mama, I use that same recipe.
Bessie: My recipe's different. It's not written down like yours.
Lillian: Well, I learned it from watching you, so I don't see how it's different.
Bessie: Because writing it down makes it taste different.
Kim: Now I see where Mama gets it from.
Bill: But do you see where you get it from?
Bessie: Don't you agree, Bill?
Bill: Well... I think everybody's biscuits are perfect. [plate thuds]
Big Jim: It's over.

Quote from Dean

Adult Dean: Grandpa was right. We'd be going home soon. Time was running out for me to redeem myself. I had one shot to prove to my cousins that my city life was superior.
Buster: Whoa, DJ! You really can drive!
[Dean gets out of the car]
Dean: Of course I can, guys. I told you, I do it all the time. No biggie.
Adult Dean: It was a moment of pure triumph. And you know what? Driving a car was a lot easier than I thought.
[The car starts sliding down the hill; crashing sound]

Quote from Adult Dean

Adult Dean: As if a whooping wasn't enough punishment for my automotive mishap, my grandparents gave me the worst farm chore of all.
Bessie: Come on, now. The manure's not gonna shovel itself.

Quote from Lillian

Bessie: What kind of solution is that? I ain't gonna give them my land! It's been in my family for generations.
Lillian: Mama, a map drawn on the back of a Sears catalog is not gonna hold up in a court of law.
Bessie: I ain't gonna give 'em this land without a fight.
Lillian: And we know you love to fight.
Bessie: What does that mean?
Lillian: Ever since I've been here, you've had something to say about every little thing I do.
Bessie: 'Cause you come in here thinking you're better than us! You're not the only one smart enough to go to college.
Lillian: Mama, we know. We know that college wasn't an option for a Black woman when you were coming up.
Bessie: College was an option for me. I was gonna study veterinary medicine at A&M. But your grandma wouldn't let me go. Told the admissions man that she needed me too much here on the farm.
Lillian: Well, why couldn't Big Granny see that it would've been better for you in the long run?
Bessie: 'Cause she'd never seen anybody do it. So I made sure I worked damn hard here so I'd get to see somebody do it.
Lillian: And, Mama, I appreciate it. But you can't be blaming me for what I had nothing to do with.
Bessie: I know you appreciate what I gave you. But sometimes... it's hard to see from three hours away.

Quote from Lillian

Dean: [cow mooing loudly] Grandma, is Lurleen okay? [cow moaning]
Bessie: She's probably in labor. [cow moos] Oh, no. It's breeched.
Dean: What's that mean?
Bessie: Baby's coming out backwards. She needs our help. Uh, Lillian, get me the...
Lillian: Already got it. Is the cord wrapped?
Bessie: Doesn't look like it. But the water bag ain't broke yet. Need to get in there and pop it.
Lillian: No, not with your arthritis. Let me do it. [water gushing out; cow moos] [Dean moans and passes out]

Quote from Lillian

Bessie: I hardly recognized you.
Lillian: Yeah, it all just came back to me.
Bessie: How long has it been, 20 years?
Lillian: At least. Well, Mama, I want you to know there is no amount of time or distance that will take this place out of me.
Bessie: That's nice, baby. But you gotta toughen that boy up.
Lillian: [laughs] That's for sure! I should've put a blanket down for him!

Quote from Dean

Adult Dean: Mama and Grandma were finally united... In making fun of me. But it made me realize that I was guilty of what Grandma accused Mama of. I'd been approaching my time in the country all wrong. [Dean jumps into the hay] I realized that part of this place was in me, just like it was in Mama, and I shouldn't have been trying to run from that all this time. So on my last day, I let my cousins awaken the "Country Dean" in me.
Buster: You want to squeeze the trigger. Don't jerk it. [BB gun fires, can clanks] Bam! We should call you "Eagle Eye DJ."
Dean: Nah. "Dean" is fine.

Quote from Dean

Big Jim: So, guess you'll be happy getting back to all the things you do in Montgomery.
Dean: Actually, I can't wait till we come back here. Can we name the calf Melvin? And can I help take care of him the next time I come?
Big Jim: Oh, sure.
Dean: Yes!
