‘The Understudy’

Season 6, Episode 24 -  Aired May 18, 1995

As Jerry dates Better Midler's understudy in a Broadway production of "Rochelle Rochelle", George causes a softball accident that knocks the leading lady out. Meanwhile, Elaine needs Frank Costanza's help when she thinks the Korean nail technicians are talking about her behind her back.

Quote from Jerry

Jerry: Do you know who speaks Korean?
Elaine: No, who?
Jerry: George's father.
Elaine: You gotta' be kidding me. How does he speak Korean?
Jerry: He used to go there a lot on business.
Elaine: What did he do?
Jerry: He sold religious articles. Statues of Jesus, the virgin Mary, that were manufactured in Korea. George, does your father speak Korean?
George: Yeah, fluently. In fact, he once bumped into reverend Sun Myung Moon.

Quote from Jerry

Gennice: Oh no, my frankfurter, my frankfurter fell. [sobs] It was really good. I can't believe that I dropped it. [sobs]
[A reluctant Jerry walks over and puts his arm around Gennice]
Jerry: It's okay. It's just a hot dog. Everything is going to be okay.
Gennice: No, it was really good.

Quote from George

George: How you feeling?
Jerry: Pretty good.
George: Your arm feeling okay?
Jerry: What's your problem?
George: Now, listen, she's all over the inside of the plate. You know, she thinks she's a big star, thinks she owns the inside corner. I say we back her off with a little chin music, you know I what mean?
Jerry: Yeah, I know what you mean. Why don't you go back and play your position there?
George: Just trying to help.
Jerry: I know what you're trying to do. You're throwing off my rhythm.
George: Go get her.

Quote from George

George: Caught that, what is it, Beaches, on cable last night. [snorts] "Wind Beneath My Wings," huh? Give me a break.
Bette Midler: Hey, get some talent, then you can mouth off.
Umpire: Strike three.
Bette Midler: What, are you blind? You stink.
Umpire: What's that?
Bette Midler: Nothing. Nothing.

Quote from George

[As George steps up to bat]
Bette Midler: Move it in. Move in everybody. Get your shrimp here. Bigmouth shrimp on special today!
Jerry: Come on George, just loosen up.

Quote from George

Newscaster: [on TV] Our top story: The show will go on but not Bette Midler. While playing softball in the park, Ms. Midler was injured when another player thoughtlessly rammed her at home plate. All captured on amateur video tape. She will be out for two weeks from her new Broadway show, "Rochelle Rochelle - The Musical."

Quote from Jerry

Gennice: Thank you! [hugs Jerry and George] Thank you!
Jerry: Well we…
Gennice: No, please. This is the first time in my life [sobs] that anyone has ever done anything like this for me. I've always had to struggle so hard for everything I ever got. And for you two to do what you did. I just know this is going to be my big break. [sobs]
[Jerry reluctantly sits down on the couch next to Gennice and puts his arm around her]
Jerry: [flatly] It's okay. Everything is going to be all right.

Quote from Frank Costanza

Elaine: Hello, everyone. Hi. This is my friend, Frank.
Ruby: Oh, what would you like today? Manicure, Pedicure?
Frank Costanza: I'll take a manicure. I don't take my shoes off for anyone.
Ruby: [Korean: "That's the least of his problems."]
Frank Costanza: What was that?

Quote from Kramer

Kramer: [on the phone] Yeah, right. It's a turkey sandwich, a side of slaw. You want white meat or dark?
Bette Midler: White meat.
Kramer: Yeah, white meat. And if I see one piece of dark meat on there, it's your ass, buster.
Bette Midler: Oh, get me one of those black-and-white cookies.
Kramer: Yeah, all right, yeah. [hangs up] They don't have any. But don't you worry, I'm going to get you one somewhere.
Bette Midler: Good. Because if I don't get a black-and-white cookie I'm not going to be very pleasant to be around.
Kramer: Now that's impossible.

Quote from Jerry

Jerry: I don't know why I have to go to the hospital. I didn't do anything to Bette Midler.
