‘Love's Labor Lost (Part 2)’

Season 8, Episode 19 -  Aired March 2, 1999

Jill is distraught when she comes round from surgery and learns she has had a hysterectomy. Tim and Jill's mother, Lillian (Polly Holliday), try to help her recover and adjust to her new reality.

Quote from Jill

Brad: Welcome home.
Jill: Oh, I'm so glad to be home. It feels like it's been about a month.
Brad: Yeah. That's because it took us a month to get home from the hospital. Dad, did you have to drive two miles an hour?
Tim: Your mom just had major surgery. I was being cautious.
Jill: Yeah, I always wondered what it would take.

Quote from Tim

Jill: What, you brought the spit things back from the hospital?
Tim: They expect you to take something. It's like when you go to a hotel, you take the little soaps and the bedroom furniture.

Quote from Brad

Jill: And so are my boys. God! Mom, do you know that the second that they got home from school, they called the hospital to tell me that they love me? Have you ever heard of such caring and sensitive teenagers?
Brad: Yeah, as soon as we walked in the door, it was like, there was this voice saying, "Call your mom."
Tim: Why don't you two caring, sensitive teens take your mom's stuff up to her room?

Quote from Jill

Lillian: I brought you a surprise.
Jill: Oh, Mom! You made your special bread pudding.
Lillian: Well, when you were a little girl, it always made you feel better.
Jill: Oh, bread pudding's so good. What was that secret ingredient you use?
Lillian: Bread.

Quote from Jill

Lillian: I felt exactly the same way when I went through menopause.
Jill: You did?
Lillian: Yes. I remember being around all those young women and seeing how all the men looked at them. And I felt like I couldn't turn a head if my hair was on fire.
Jill: Well...
Lillian: I thought because my body had changed, I was less of a woman.
Jill: And what did you do?
Lillian: Well, one day I sat down and looked in the mirror, and I took stock of myself. And I realized I had my looks, my health, my brains, four beautiful daughters. And the best part is no PMS.
Jill: Or periods.
Lillian: Or cramps.
Jill: That's true.

Quote from Tim

Jill: Tim, come over here. I want to talk to you. I want to apologize.
Tim: [inquisitive grunt]
Jill: I've been really upset. And I've misdirected my anger at you. And it's really not fair, 'cause you've been so attentive, and caring and sweet...
Tim: Honey, honey, honey.
Jill: ...and patient.
Tim: It's okay. You did the same for me when I got my vasectomy. But you were the one who made me get it.
Jill: I made you get it? I strongly urged you to get it. And once you knew that it wasn't gonna make you any less of a man or that I wasn't gonna look at you any differently, you were okay with it.
Tim: Yeah, I was.
Jill: What about me?
Tim: Of course you're okay with it. You're the one that made me do it.

Quote from Tim

Jill: You know what? I'm gonna take that extension that you got for me.
Tim: Good.
Jill: I love you.
Tim: I love you, too. When do you suppose you and I will be able to...
Jill: No, honey. I think it's gonna be a while before we can have sex.
Tim: No. I mean, turn the thermostat up a little bit.

Quote from Tim

Tim: What's going on? It's been three hours. Tell me what's happening.
Dr. Fields: Well, we had a few complications.
Tim: What do you mean, "complications"?
Dr. Fields: She had an allergic reaction to the antibiotic and she went into shock.
Tim: She's in shock?
Dr. Fields: No, no, no, she's gonna be just fine. We were able to stabilize her. There's no reason for concern.
Tim: So she's okay then?
Dr. Fields: Yeah, absolutely. But, unfortunately, I did find dermoid cysts twisting her ovaries. Now the cysts themselves are benign. But I'm afraid I had to remove her ovaries.
Tim: So she had a total hysterectomy?
Dr. Fields: Yeah. Sorry. I just didn't have any choice.

Quote from Tim

Tim: Oh, boy. What was her reaction when she found out?
Dr. Fields: Well, she doesn't know yet.
Tim: Oh, boy. Do we have to tell her?
Dr. Fields: I think we do. I'll stop in and talk to her when she's out of recovery in her regular room.
Tim: All right.
Dr. Fields: You okay?
Tim: Yeah, thanks, thanks. [Dr. Fields walks away]
Volunteer: Mr. Taylor?
Tim: Yeah?
Volunteer: Your wife's out of surgery and the doctor will be out to talk to you in a few minutes.

Quote from Tim

Tim: [on the phone] Hey, boys, it's Dad. Mom is A-okay. When you get home from school, I want you to give her a call. Tell her that you love her or something like that. But make her think it was your idea. Make sure you erase this message. Gotta go, bye.
