When Debra's mother Lois (guest star Katherine Helmond) comes to stay, Debra starts to wish she was more involved with the family... like Marie.

Quote from Debra

Frank: How about a little slice? Hey!
Debra: No, no. We are not eating cake, all right? We are eating dinner. Not cake! Cake is not dinner. I made dinner for my mother. Not cake! So no cake! [phone rings]
Ray: I'll get it. Just remind me where we were.
Marie: Well, I didn't think if I helped with dessert it would be a problem.
Lois: Well it's not a problem, Marie. It's a lovely cake.
Debra: Which we are not having util after dinner, Mom.

Quote from Ray

Lois: [on the phone] Yes, it's fine. Lovely. Well, it's not really a vacation. Debra seems awfully stressed out.
Ray: [to Debra] What's the matter? What are you doing?
Debra: Shh!
Lois: Perhaps I should go to the hotel.
Debra: Hm. Hotel?
Ray: See, now why can't I have that kind of relationship with my mom?

Quote from Ray

Debra: I can't believe my mom wants to stay at a hotel.
Ray: You know there are kids in other countries who can't afford to send their mothers to hotels.

Quote from Ray

Lois: [on the phone] Give my regards to the gazelles. Ciao. [hangs up]
Ray: So, how's he doing?
Lois: Wonderfully. He's bringing me back a Zulu death mask.
Ray: Hmm, wow, that's great. He probably gets a deal on them over there, you know? No state tax.
Lois: [chuckles] Yes.

Quote from Ray

Debra: How come you want to go to a hotel?
Ray: Lemon chicken! Let's eat it. Let's, uh, wash it down with a little wasserfluss.
Debra: I heard you tell Dad you wanted to stay at a hotel?
Lois: Oh, well, it's just that there's a lot going on around here, and perhaps it would be easier for you if I weren't in the way.
Debra: You're not in the way, Mom!
Lois: It was just a notion. No need to get upset. Come on. This is my vacation.
Ray: I'd change travel agents.

Quote from Ray

Debra: So, um, Mom, I was thinking that maybe tomorrow we could go look at fabric together because I wanted to make some new drapes for our bedroom.
Lois: Actually, I was hoping to get into the city tomorrow to see the Renoir exhibit.
Debra: Oh, yeah. Yeah, that'd be great. I just don't think the Renoir exhibit is something we could actually take all the kids to.
Marie: No, you go. I'll take care of the kids. They love their Grandma.
Ray: Stay down.

Quote from Marie

Marie: Debra?
Ray: [Debra grabs Ray's shoulder to stop him leaving] Ow! Ow! Ow! Nails!
Marie: Oh, Debra.
Debra: Oh, Marie.
Ray: Ow! Ow! Ow!
Marie: I love you so very much.
Ray: Let go! Let go!
Debra: Ray?
Ray: [whispers] I'll call you.

Quote from Marie

Frank: [on the machine] Hey, leave a message.
Marie: [leaving a message] Hello? Everything's fine now. You can bring the cake back over. Frank, pick up. Robert? Raymond? Are you eating that cake?! You better have not started that cake! That cake is for all of us! Frank?! I'm coming over!

Quote from Ray

Debra: Well, could you be interested in just one thing we're doing around here, maybe?
Lois: What are you saying? I'm very interested.
Debra: Well, you sure don't show it.
Ray: [sings] Lemon chicken very pretty and uh, Lemon chicken is sweet.
Debra: You act like you don't care about me or what's going on with the kids. You haven't asked Ray one question about his job.
Ray: [sings] But the chicken of the poor lemon Is impossible to eat.
Debra: Stop it, Ray! Those aren't the words! I'm trying to talk to my mother, okay?
