‘I on Sports’

Season 6, Episode 2 -  Aired October 1, 1987

Sam's old friend, Dave Richards, asks him to fill in as the sports presenter on the news.

Quote from Sam

Sam: Yeah, boy, that's true. You know, I came real close to losing my dignity tonight. I've been thinking about it, you know, I'm going to hang up the old Channel 13 blazer. You know, if that phone were to ring right now and they were to beg me to come back, I wouldn't do it. I think it's just time that I grew up and accepted what I am: a bartender. And a damned good one at that, too. [phone rings] [answers phone] Cheers. It's the station. Well, you're kidding me. The switchboard's lighting up? Well, look, hey. Listen, I'm sorry, I don't care if they loved me. I happen to have a job already and I have friends and I have my dignity. Yeah. Well, thanks anyway. Yeah, bye-bye. [hangs up]
Rebecca: Very admirable, Mr. Malone.
Sam: Well, I still have a little nobility left.
Norm: All right.
Cliff: Okay, Sam.
Rebecca: Oh, I have to cancel that relief bartender. [pikcs up the phone]
Sam: Oh, maybe you ought to, uh...
Rebecca: Hello?
[Rebecca looks over and sees Woody on the pay phone]
