Adrian Monk: There's something else. There's something that's been nagging me. Just before Ethan Rickover died, he said, "Take care of her."
Dr. Bell: Take care of who?
Adrian Monk: I don't know. I'll probably never know.
Dr. Bell: All right, you want my advice? And I assume you do, because you're here. Let it go. Alright, it's ancient history. It's time for Adrian Monk to set sail into the great unknown.
Adrian Monk: I hate the great unknown.
Dr. Bell: How do you know? It's unknown.
Adrian Monk: If it's unknown, how do you know it's so great?
Dr. Bell: Good point. Maybe it's the not so great unknown. But it's out there, and it's waiting for you. And there is no reason for you to be afraid of it.

Natalie: Mr Monk, you have to push "Play." It's been over 2 hours. It's okay, it's okay. Here we go.
Trudy Monk: [on tape] I know you've always idealized me. You think I'm some kind of saint. But sweetheart, I am not perfect. I made a mistake. A big mistake. It was 15 years ago. Before we met. I had an affair.
Adrian Monk: Oh. [presses pause, gets up briefly, returns to couch and presses play]
Trudy Monk: ...with my law professor. But he was married at the time. I swear, I didn't know that. Anyway, we... Uh, well, I was pregnant. [Monk pauses the tape while he sobs] I know you're disappointed. I didn't love him. I didn't, really know him. But I loved being pregnant. It was a girl. She was born January 2nd 1983. She died the same day. She lived for 9 minutes. I never, saw her. Never saw her. Anyway, the father, the professor, his name is Ethan Rickover.
Adrian Monk: [pauses] Rickover. [plays]
Trudy Monk: He's a judge now. He's just been nominated to the Court of Appeals. Which is why I'm making this tape. Because the woman who've been missing all week, Wendy Straud, she is the midwife who delivered my daughter.
Adrian Monk: [pauses] The missing midwife. The missing midwife. Eh, I don't know what to think, tell me what to think.
Natalie: Let's just let it play.
Trudy Monk: And Ethan called me, yesterday. And just out of the blue. I haven't talked to him over 10 years. And he wants to meet me tomorrow. And I don't know, maybe... You know, maybe I'm just being paranoid, but... There was just something, in his voice, it just... It scared me, you know? And Ethan he has... He has a dark side. I mean, I know it, I've seen it. I know what he is capable of. And, anyway... That's why I'm making this tape. And if I'm wrong, which I'm sure I am, and, nothing happens, I'll just, switch it out for the digital watch that you've been asking for. But if I'm right, and something happens, I wanted you to know everything. Because you deserve to know everything, Adrian. You are more than love of my life. You are my life. You are my life.

Natalie: [answers phone] Hello? Yeah, he's right here. Oh, okay, I understand. We're on our way. [hangs up] We have to go. They found another body on West Milton Street. The Captain is gonna meet us there.
Adrian Monk: Wait. Wait.
Natalie: What are you doing?
Adrian Monk: Checking the stove. Make sure it's off.
Natalie: Yeah, that's a good idea. You don't want to get all the way downtown and not be sure.
Adrian Monk: That actually happened to me once.
