Monk: Mr. Monk and the End (Part Two)

816. Mr. Monk and the End (Part Two)

Aired December 4, 2009

When Monk finally watches the videotape Trudy recorded before he death, he at last learns who killed her, and who has poisoned him.

Quote from Dr. Bell

Adrian Monk: There's something else. There's something that's been nagging me. Just before Ethan Rickover died, he said, "Take care of her."
Dr. Bell: Take care of who?
Adrian Monk: I don't know. I'll probably never know.
Dr. Bell: All right, you want my advice? And I assume you do, because you're here. Let it go. Alright, it's ancient history. It's time for Adrian Monk to set sail into the great unknown.
Adrian Monk: I hate the great unknown.
Dr. Bell: How do you know? It's unknown.
Adrian Monk: If it's unknown, how do you know it's so great?
Dr. Bell: Good point. Maybe it's the not so great unknown. But it's out there, and it's waiting for you. And there is no reason for you to be afraid of it.

Quote from Adrian Monk

Natalie: Mr Monk, you have to push "Play." It's been over 2 hours. It's okay, it's okay. Here we go.
Trudy Monk: [on tape] I know you've always idealized me. You think I'm some kind of saint. But sweetheart, I am not perfect. I made a mistake. A big mistake. It was 15 years ago. Before we met. I had an affair.
Adrian Monk: Oh. [presses pause, gets up briefly, returns to couch and presses play]
Trudy Monk: ...with my law professor. But he was married at the time. I swear, I didn't know that. Anyway, we... Uh, well, I was pregnant. [Monk pauses the tape while he sobs] I know you're disappointed. I didn't love him. I didn't, really know him. But I loved being pregnant. It was a girl. She was born January 2nd 1983. She died the same day. She lived for 9 minutes. I never, saw her. Never saw her. Anyway, the father, the professor, his name is Ethan Rickover.
Adrian Monk: [pauses] Rickover. [plays]
Trudy Monk: He's a judge now. He's just been nominated to the Court of Appeals. Which is why I'm making this tape. Because the woman who've been missing all week, Wendy Straud, she is the midwife who delivered my daughter.
Adrian Monk: [pauses] The missing midwife. The missing midwife. Eh, I don't know what to think, tell me what to think.
Natalie: Let's just let it play.
Trudy Monk: And Ethan called me, yesterday. And just out of the blue. I haven't talked to him over 10 years. And he wants to meet me tomorrow. And I don't know, maybe... You know, maybe I'm just being paranoid, but... There was just something, in his voice, it just... It scared me, you know? And Ethan he has... He has a dark side. I mean, I know it, I've seen it. I know what he is capable of. And, anyway... That's why I'm making this tape. And if I'm wrong, which I'm sure I am, and, nothing happens, I'll just, switch it out for the digital watch that you've been asking for. But if I'm right, and something happens, I wanted you to know everything. Because you deserve to know everything, Adrian. You are more than love of my life. You are my life. You are my life.

Quote from Adrian Monk

Adrian Monk: Your garage was open. I borrowed a shovel. Pick it up. Pick it up! Over there.
Judge Ethan Rickover: Are you gonna kill a federal judge?
Adrian Monk: Tonight, I'm the judge. Over there. Let's go. Let's go.

Quote from Adrian Monk

Lieutenant Disher: What was that?
Adrian Monk: That is Wendy Straud.
Captain Stottlemeyer: The midwife from 12 years ago?
Adrian Monk: Yeah.
Lieutenant Disher: [takes the shovel] Bones. It's a human skull.
Adrian Monk: I couldn't figure it out, why you wouldn't move.
Lieutenant Disher: [to the uniform officers] Get CSI down here now.
Adrian Monk: Then I remembered the sundial, under the tree. Why would anyone put a sundial under a big tree like this, in the shade. It didn't make any sense. [coughs] Twelve years ago, when he was nominated for the federal bench, his name was in all the papers. Wendy Straud must have seen it. Right? Right?!
Judge Ethan Rickover: She said she found Jesus. That she was born again. She couldn't live with a guilt. She was gonna tell everyone about me and Trudy, and the child.
Adrian Monk: So you killed her. And then Trudy. And for what? For nothing!
Captain Stottlemeyer: Monk! Monk! Monk!
Adrian Monk: For a job! For a job!
Captain Stottlemeyer: Monk!
Adrian Monk: For a job. [puts gun down on the sundial]
Captain Stottlemeyer: Hey, hey, Rickover, put the gun down!
Lieutenant Disher: No! No!
Judge Ethan Rickover: You take care of her! [gunshot]

Quote from Dr. Bell

Dr. Bell: I think I'm gonna cry. [both chuckle] The last time you were here, what was that? Two weeks ago?
Adrian Monk: A week and a half.
Dr. Bell: Week and a half. You looked horrible. And now look at you. You look great. It's like a miracle.
Adrian Monk: It was a miracle.
Dr. Bell: So, finally... After 12 years. 12 long years. Closure.
Adrian Monk: Closure.
Dr. Bell: How do you feel?
Adrian Monk: Fine. I'm good.
Dr. Bell: So, how do you feel?
Adrian Monk: I know how I'm supposed to feel. I'm supposed to feel like I'm finally happy, finally at peace.
Dr. Bell: But?
Adrian Monk: I feel... empty.
Dr. Bell: Well, that's not surprising. Adrian, you've spent most of your adult life looking for the man who killed your wife. See, that search kept you going. Now, it's gone. So, what's next? What do you do when you wake up tomorrow? What do you care about? Now these, these are the difficult choices.

Quote from Adrian Monk

Natalie: Mr. Monk, what should I write? Mr. Monk, what should I write on the box?
Adrian Monk: Case closed.
Natalie: "Case closed", I like the sound of that. [writes] Oh, shoot! The "e" is crooked. Is that okay, or should I get another box? Mr. Monk? What are you reading?
Adrian Monk: Oh, um... "A midwife is still missing. Presumed dead." It's an old article about Wendy Straud. It's on the bottom of this section. "Miss Straud made headline 15 years ago, January 2, 1983, when she found a newborn infant girl on a playground and brought her to an local orphanage." 1983? Take care of her.
Natalie: Excuse me?
Adrian Monk: Rickover's last words. It wasn't the affair, Natalie. This is what he was covering up. It was the baby. It didn't die. The baby lived. Trudy didn't know. She never knew it. They lied to her. Her daughter lived. They put her up for adoption. She is alive and she's out there somewhere. [laughs] Trudy's daughter.

Quote from Adrian Monk

Captain Stottlemeyer: Are you ready? They found her. Her name is Molly.
Adrian Monk: Molly.
Captain Stottlemeyer: Molly Evans. She was adopted 25 years ago by Andrew and Beth Evans. She is unmarried, she lives in Monterey County and get this, she writes movie reviews for The Cronicle.
Lieutenant Disher: Well, that makes sense. Trudy was a writer.
Adrian Monk: Monterey County, that's 20 minutes away.
Captain Stottlemeyer: Yeah, Family Services has already contacted her, and she would love to meet you.
Adrian Monk: I can't do it.
Lieutenant Disher: Sure you can.
Adrian Monk: No. What if she doesn't like me? I mean, a lot of people don't like me. I mean, I'm not crazy about me. I can't do it. I'm not doing it. I would rather keep things the way they are. I like things where they are.
Captain Stottlemeyer: No, you don't.
Natalie: Mr. Monk, you have to go. I'm telling you, you have to go. This is a gift, Mr. Monk. Trudy sent you a gift. She sent you someone to love. It's what you've been missing.

Quote from Adrian Monk

Adrian Monk: Okay, okay, I'll come with you. I can do Canada. I went there once with your mother.
Molly Evans: Well, what about your job?
Adrian Monk: I don't have a job. I'm retired.
Molly Evans: Since when?
Adrian Monk: Since you. Since you and me. Since us.
Molly Evans: I thought you were broke.
Adrian Monk: No, I'll be fine. I can live for 20 years if I don't eat, or pay rent, or pay Natalie, right?

Quote from Adrian Monk

Natalie: [answers phone] Hello? Yeah, he's right here. Oh, okay, I understand. We're on our way. [hangs up] We have to go. They found another body on West Milton Street. The Captain is gonna meet us there.
Adrian Monk: Wait. Wait.
Natalie: What are you doing?
Adrian Monk: Checking the stove. Make sure it's off.
Natalie: Yeah, that's a good idea. You don't want to get all the way downtown and not be sure.
Adrian Monk: That actually happened to me once.

Quote from Captain Stottlemeyer

Captain Stottlemeyer: Doctor. How is our boy?
Dr. Matthew Shuler: He's stable. Actually, he's better than stable. His vital signs have improved. We're not sure why.
Captain Stottlemeyer: That would be the hatred. Pure malice is the best medicine in the world.

Quote from Lieutenant Disher

Lieutenant Disher: [on the phone] Yeah, I know. The doctor is in with him right now. We still don't know. Alright, I'll call you later. I love you. [hangs up]
Captain Stottlemeyer: Who was that?
Lieutenant Disher: That was the Deputy Commissioner.
Captain Stottlemeyer: Deputy Commissioner, Patrick Watson?
Lieutenant Disher: Yeah, that's right.
Captain Stottlemeyer: You said, "I love you."
Lieutenant Disher: I do love him. I think he is doing a great job. I mean, why- Why, you don't think he's...
Captain Stottlemeyer: I think he's doing a fine job, but I don't tell him that I love him.
Lieutenant Disher: Well, maybe you should, it's just common courtesy.
Captain Stottlemeyer: It's not common courtesy.
Lieutenant Disher: Well, I think you're doing a great job. I love you.
Captain Stottlemeyer: Okay, Randy. I'm sorry I asked. When you're ready to tell me what it's really going on, don't.

Quote from Lieutenant Disher

Captain Stottlemeyer: Where the hell is the siren?
Lieutenant Disher: In the back.
Captain Stottlemeyer: What's it doing at the back?
Lieutenant Disher: Well, I haven't use it for 10 months.
Captain Stottlemeyer: Why? Did you think the bad guys all retired? That crime is over? What the hell? What is all this crap?
Lieutenant Disher: Yard sale.
Captain Stottlemeyer: You bought all this?
Lieutenant Disher: No, I'm selling it.
Captain Stottlemeyer: Selling all this? Hey, are these my barbells?
Lieutenant Disher: No, those are mine.
Captain Stottlemeyer: No, I lent you my barbells last year. These are my barbells.
Lieutenant Disher: So I bought the same ones.
Captain Stottlemeyer: With my initials on them?
Lieutenant Disher: Okay, maybe those are yours. Just take them.
Captain Stottlemeyer: I'm not gonna take them now, we're in the middle of thing. Couldn't find the siren.
Lieutenant Disher: I might have sold it.

Quote from Adrian Monk

Adrian Monk: Yeah, this is her parallel parking. Yeah, she's an excellent driver. She's never had a single parking ticket. Yeah, here we are, this is us having lunch. Yeah, she eats out 5 times a week. She's a vegetarian, but she eat fish.
Captain Stottlemeyer: You took all these pictures?
Adrian Monk: Yeah. Oh, she is drinking coffee. It's a Kona Blend, sometimes she has the Colombian.
Captain Stottlemeyer: Monk, there's gotta be more than 600 pictures here.
Adrian Monk: Well, the rest are still being developed.
Captain Stottlemeyer: You've only known her for 3 days.
Adrian Monk: I feel like I've known her forever. She feels the same way. She actually said that. Oh, yeah, these are her adoptive parents. That's, uh, Andy and Beth. They are great. He's a little bit overweight, but, uh, he's a retired ophthalmologist. Oh, yeah, this is her new boyfriend, Kyle. He's 2 years younger than she is. She doesn't know how he feels about that. And this is- This is her telling me not to take so many pictures. This is her trying to take the camera away. Oh, and guess what else? You know the Internet? She's on it.
Captain Stottlemeyer: Really? She make the cut?
Adrian Monk: Oh yeah, yeah. She has her own website. It is called a "blog". Really. Yeah, that's what it's called. A "blog". You know, you can look up all her old movie reviews. Randy, you like movies, so you- you- you just, uh, type in, uh, "MollyEvansReviews" and then a "." and "com".

Quote from Lieutenant Disher

Captain Stottlemeyer: [takes paper from Randy] What is this? "Leland". You're writing me a letter? "Dear Leland,"
Lieutenant Disher: I've been holding onto it all week. I've just been waiting for the right time. I guess this is the right time.
Captain Stottlemeyer: Randy, when did this happen?
Lieutenant Disher: I've been talking to them for a few months.
Adrian Monk: What's going on?
Captain Stottlemeyer: Randy's leaving us. He's taking another job.
Natalie: What?
Captain Stottlemeyer: Yeah. You're looking at the new Police Chief of Summit, New Jersey.
Adrian Monk: What?
Natalie: Police Chief? Wow, congratulations!
Adrian Monk: Congratulations. Nicely done, Chief.
Lieutenant Disher: Thank you. Captain, so what do you think? You think I'm ready?
Captain Stottlemeyer: I don't think anything. I know that you are ready. You are gonna be great.
Lieutenant Disher: Well, I had a great teacher. I'm talking about you.
Captain Stottlemeyer: I know what you meant, Randy. Thank you, Randy.

Quote from Lieutenant Disher

Captain Stottlemeyer: Um, why New Jersey?
Natalie: Oh, I think I know the answer to that.
Captain Stottlemeyer: Sharona.
Adrian Monk: Sharona?
Captain Stottlemeyer: You and Sharona?
Lieutenant Disher: We've got a place, we're moving in, and...
Captain Stottlemeyer: That is perfect. This is perfect. You and Sharona. I knew it. Well, I didn't actually know it, but I know I kind of know it.
Lieutenant Disher: Thanks, you guys. Thank you.

Quote from Adrian Monk

Natalie: Mr. Monk, I'm so sorry. What are you doing?
Adrian Monk: Ethan Rickover.
Natalie: What are you gonna do? Mr. Monk, let's just call the captain.
Adrian Monk: Why didn't she tell me?
Natalie: Mr. Monk, everybody has secrets. She loved you. She didn't want to disappoint you.
Adrian Monk: And that tape has been on my bookshelf this whole time. I've been looking at it for... [coughs] For 12 years. [coughs]
Natalie: Mr. Monk, look at you, you can't go anywhere.
Adrian Monk: I'm going.
Natalie: No, Mr. Monk, come on, you're sick.
Adrian Monk: I'm not gonna die. I'm not gonna die. Not yet.

Quote from Adrian Monk

Judge Ethan Rickover: Well, Mr. Monk, what a surprise. I heard you were sick.
Adrian Monk: No, no. No, I'm- I'm feeling much better. [Monk drops his wipe] Much, much better.
Judge Ethan Rickover: [picks up wipe with a pen] Oh, that's a relief. So, you came all the way downtown, just to cheer me on? That's nice.
Adrian Monk: I'm here because you killed my wife.
Judge Ethan Rickover: I'm sorry?
Adrian Monk: You heard me. Trudy Ellison. She was a student of yours at Berkeley. You had an affair with her. She got pregnant. And 12 years ago, when you were nominated for the Appellate Court, you made sure that story never got out. You killed 2 women. Wendy Straud...
Judge Ethan Rickover: Uh-huh.
Adrian Monk: Was the midwife at the birth. And my wife.
Judge Ethan Rickover: [laughs] Well, they told me to expect this. They said that at every confirmation hearing, the nuts just come out of woodwork.

Quote from Adrian Monk

Natalie: Judge Rickover, we know the whole story.
Judge Ethan Rickover: Oh, really? Mr. Monk, I taught thousands of students at Berkeley. Some of them were unstable. More than just a few had crushes on me. But please, where's your proof? Where's the child?
Adrian Monk: The baby died.
Judge Ethan Rickover: The baby died. Birth records, paper trails...
Adrian Monk: Gone! It's all gone. You took care of that. You sent Joey Kazarinski to the birthing center last week.
Natalie: They were updating their files. The director must have found something about Trudy, about the baby.
So you had him killed.
Adrian Monk: You've been covering your tracks for 26 years. [two security guards apprehend Monk]
Judge Ethan Rickover: No, it's all right. It's all right. It's all right. Mr. Monk is sick. He's seriously ill. He's obviously not thinking straight.
Adrian Monk: She made a tape, Judge. She made a tape.
Judge Ethan Rickover: Of course she did. The woman was delusional. I remember. Trudy...
Adrian Monk: Ellison.
Judge Ethan Rickover: Ellison, yes, she She follow me around. She wrote me letters. Phone calls at 2, 3 in the morning. I remember that she also claimed she was pregnant. She probably believed it too. She was quite an unstable woman. Apparently you had a lot in common. [Monk attacks Rickover]
Natalie: Mr. Monk! Mr. Monk! No. Mr. Monk. No, Mr. Monk! Stop. Mr. Monk, please!
Adrian Monk: [being carried away] This is not over! This is not over!
Judge Ethan Rickover: Yes, it is.

Quote from Captain Stottlemeyer

Adrian Monk: I can't go home?
Captain Stottlemeyer: Buddy, you're lucky, you're not in jail. You've been charged with assault and threatening a sitting judge.
Adrian Monk: Yeah, some Judge.
Captain Stottlemeyer: We know. We've been digging around. It all checks out.
Lieutenant Disher: Dr. Nash had a second cell phone. He called Rickover half a dozen times. We figure he was trying to blackmail him, Rickover hired Kazarinski to kill him.
Captain Stottlemeyer: Give him- Give him the files.
Lieutenant Disher: I'll just put it there.
Captain Stottlemeyer: You got it. You found him. How does it feel?
Adrian Monk: It's not over. It's not over. Just the air- The air that I'm breathing. I hate the thought that he's breathing the same air.
Captain Stottlemeyer: I know, buddy. Look, we're gonna get him, I promise you. This is me promising you, the son of a bitch is going down.

Quote from Adrian Monk

Adrian Monk: Randy, close the door. Close the door. Leland, listen. I won't be there.
Captain Stottlemeyer: Oh, nonsense. Don't talk like that. Don't give up. Nobody is giving up. The doctor's are working around the clock.
Adrian Monk: Leland, kill him. Promise me.
Captain Stottlemeyer: Yes, alright, I promise. Yes, I'll- I'll do it. There won't a trial.
Adrian Monk: You're lying.

Quote from Natalie

Natalie: Sweetie, that's the wrong pillow.
Lt. Steven Albright: It is?
Adrian Monk: Yeah, he needs his Trudy pillow. It's in the closet. It's in a plastic case. She slept on it, and he can still smell her.
Lt. Steven Albright: Wow, is that Trudy's car?
Natalie: Yeah. Well, at least he knows. If he doesn't make it, at least he'll die knowing.

Quote from Adrian Monk

Nurse: What are you doing?
Adrian Monk: There is something, missing here. There's something wrong.
Nurse: I'll tell you what's wrong. You shouldn't be sitting up. Look at you. You're agitating yourself. I'm sure whatever it is can wait.
Adrian Monk: No, not this one. Can't wait. Not this one. This guy killed 3 people.
Nurse: This man? You never can tell, can you?
Adrian Monk: No, he's covering up an affair he had.
Nurse: Is that all? It doesn't seem right. Nobody cares about affairs anymore.
Adrian Monk: That's what I was thinking. There's got to be something else. There has to be more to it.
Nurse: The doctor wants you to sleep tonight. I'm leaving this here. It'll put you right out. Sleep is the best medicine.
Adrian Monk: "He'll never move."
Nurse: Pardon me?
Adrian Monk: That's what they said. I heard them talking. So, why won't he move? What it is about that house?

Quote from Natalie

Lt. Steven Albright: Natalie, are you all right?
Natalie: I don't know. I don't feel so good. Oh, spots. I'm seeing spots. Oh, my God. Ah, it's the poison. It's the same as Mr. Monk.
Lt. Steven Albright: I don't understand, I've been with you all day, you haven't eaten a thing.
Natalie: [looks at the wipe in her hand] Oh, my God.
Lieutenant Disher: Natalie? Babe, what is it?
Natalie: Rickover. Ethan Rickover. At the hearing, Mr. Monk dropped a wipe.
[flashback:]
Judge Ethan Rickover: I thought you were sick.
Adrian Monk: I'm feeling much better, much, much better. [drops wipe]
[present:]
Natalie: He used his pen. He didn't want to touch it. Oh God, it was in the wipes.
Lt. Steven Albright: That's how we missed it. We assumed it's the food. We gotta get you to the hospital. We have the source now. We can break it down. We'll have an antidote in 2 hours.
Natalie: And Mr. Monk?
Lt. Steven Albright: He'll be fine.
Natalie: You gotta tell him. You gotta call him.

Quote from Captain Stottlemeyer

Lieutenant Disher: Captain, here you are. I was looking all over for you. You haven't heard?
Captain Stottlemeyer: Heard what?
Lieutenant Disher: There's a cure.
Captain Stottlemeyer: There's a cure?
Lieutenant Disher: Yeah, for Monk, they isolated the poison. It was on his wipes.
Captain Stottlemeyer: Ha, the wipes! That's great news. There's a cure! Come on, I was just on my way to the hospital. We can celebrate.
Lieutenant Disher: He is not there.
Captain Stottlemeyer: Who's not there?
Lieutenant Disher: Monk, he escaped. And he drugged a cop and took his gun.
Captain Stottlemeyer: Okay, come on, let's go, we can take your car.
Lieutenant Disher: Where are we going?
Captain Stottlemeyer: To stop Monk.
Lieutenant Disher: From doing what?
Captain Stottlemeyer: The wrong thing.

Quote from Adrian Monk

Adrian Monk: Keep digging.
First Uniform Cop: Sir, I'm not gonna tell you again. I want you to put the weapon down.
Adrian Monk: No, we're not done yet.
Judge Ethan Rickover: I'm gonna bring up a sore subject here. I don't want you to overreact. But Trudy and I used to talk about capital punishment all the time. She never believed in it.
Adrian Monk: Shut up! Just shut it! You mention her name again, it'll be the last word you ever say.

Quote from Adrian Monk

Molly Evans: What are you doing with all these pictures, anyway?
Adrian Monk: I'm making scrapbooks. I've already filled 4 of them. You want to see them?
Molly Evans: Maybe when I get back.
Adrian Monk: Back from where?
Molly Evans: I have to go to Toronto, the film festival.
Adrian Monk: Oh, yeah, what film festival?
Molly Evans: The Toronto Film Festival.
Adrian Monk: Oh, yeah, right.

Quote from Adrian Monk

Molly Evans: Adrian, you can't quit. What would you do all day?
Adrian Monk: I do not know. This. Hang around with you. I just want watch you grow up.
Molly Evans: I am 26 years old, I'm not a kid.
Adrian Monk: I just want you in my life. You know, I need you in my life.
Molly Evans: I am in your life. I'm not going anywhere. I'm worried about your life. You can't quit. Not for me. There are lots of other Trudys out there. And I think you're obligated to help them. You have a gift.
Adrian Monk: And a curse.
Molly Evans: It's not a curse, it's a gift. Can't you see that? [Monk shrugs] Maybe that's why I'm here, to remind you. [off Monk's look] What?
Adrian Monk: That's exactly what your mother used to say.
Molly Evans: Really? What was she like?
Adrian Monk: Well, she snored.
Molly Evans: [laughs] She did?
Adrian Monk: Yeah. She never believed me. One night, I taped her with a tape recorder. She still didn't believe it. She loved Willie Nelson. When she was thinking, she'd stick out her tongue like this.
Molly Evans: Oh, my God! I do that all the time.
Adrian Monk: I know. I love it when you do that.

Quote from Natalie

Adrian Monk: What are you doing?
Natalie: Cutting out the recipe. I'm making dinner for Steven. You wanna come? You should come.
Adrian Monk: Ah, no, thank you.
Natalie: I didn't poison you. It was on the wipes.
Adrian Monk: I know, I can't go anyway, I have plans.
Natalie: Uh-huh. What kind of plans?
Adrian Monk: With Molly. We're going to the movies.
Natalie: You're going to the movies?
Adrian Monk: Yeah.
Natalie: [emotional] Adrian Monk is going to the movies?
Adrian Monk: Why are you crying, is that so strange?
Natalie: It's not strange at all. That's why I'm crying. What are you gonna see?
Adrian Monk: I don't know. Whatever is in theater 10.
Natalie: Okay, all right, that's more like it. That's Adrian Monk, we know and love.
