Quote from The Club

Adult Dean: Now that I'd seen those photos of naked women, I couldn't focus on anything anymore.
[fantasy: Dean imagines the picture of Harriet Tubman in his textbook talking to him:]
Harriet Tubman: You're thinking about what my boobs look like, aren't you, Dean?
Dean: No. I swear I wasn't.
Harriet Tubman: That's not why I risked my life saving thousands of innocent lives. Pull yourself together.

Quote from The Workplace

[Lillian picks up a copy of the bible with three condoms on top as she packs a box for Bruce]
Lillian: Lord, you know I am not ready to be a grandmother. About time, young man. Letter? [Dean tries to put a football in the box] No, see, that's not gonna fit.
Dean: Mom...
Lillian: Dean!
Dean: But I told him I'd send him something to play catch with his buddies!
Lillian: Well, he's at war, not summer camp.
Dean: Then why'd you pack him all those balloons?
Adult Dean: Obviously, I'd never seen condoms or balloons, apparently.

Quote from Brad Mitzvah

Adult Dean: With all the Charlene and Keisa drama, I forgot that I was entering an actual synagogue for the first time in my life, though it kind of reminded me of church. There was one thing that I couldn't quite figure out, though.
Dean: Hey. Where's their Jesus on the cross? [Kim clicks her teeth] What? Jesus was a Jewish man, too, you know.
Adult Dean: Clearly, I was still playing catch-up on the whole Jewish thing.

Quote from The Sleepover

Dean: Looks like they plan to be alone tonight.
Kim: Gross.
Dean: I feel so sorry for them. You and I get to go hang out with our friends and have fun, while Mama and Daddy are stuck in the house with nothing to do.
Kim: Wha... [sighs]

Quote from Love, Dean

Keisa: You know, this is gonna be the first summer we're not together.
Dean: Wow. You're right. I was spending so much time worrying about Broderick... I can't imagine not seeing you for that long either. [thunder crashing]
Both: One Mississippi, two Mississippi.
[thunder crashes] [rain pounding] [lights rattling] [wind rushing]
Adult Dean: We had every reason to be scared. But something about that moment, in spite of all the storms outside that room, made me feel oddly safe.
[montage of Dean watching Keisa]
Dean: What if it was "Love" love? [they kiss]

Quote from Green Eyed Monster

Adult Dean: The weekend after April 4, 1968, Black people all over the country attended memorial services for Dr. King. It was a time where, just like in life, he brought people together of all races to mourn our country's great loss. To those of us in Montgomery, where his civil-rights career began, it was a particularly difficult time.
Choir: ♪ His eye ♪ ♪ Is on the sparrow ♪ ♪ And I know He watches me ♪ ♪ Watches me ♪
Adult Dean: Families from our neighborhood gathered together to memorialize the great man. He was an idol. He was respected. He was eloquent. [laughing] He was gorgeous. [Dean is smiling as he looks at Keisa] He looked great in a black dress and stockings. S-Snap out of it, man. This isn't the time or place for looking at girls. This is a memorial for a hero, a noble man, a martyr. [Dean sees Cory sitting next to Keisa] A lying, conniving snake in the grass who'd kiss the girl you've loved since second grade behind your back! I couldn't help it. In spite of this solemn moment, all I was thinking about was seeing Keisa kissing my best friend. Please let there be a lesson from the pastor's words that will help me.
Pastor: Let us not give in to anger or revenge...
Woman: [o.s.] Yes.
Pastor: ...but remember the words of Dr. King himself... "Forgive those who inflict evil and injury upon us."
Adult Dean: Nope. Nothing. This is torture. But I guess it could have been worse. At least they weren't rubbing it in my face, being all lovey-dovey and holding hands.
Pastor: Everyone, please, take your neighbor's hand and pray.
[Dean sees Cory take Keisa's hand]
Dean: [shouts] Why, God, why?! [congregation murmuring]
Lillian: He's just a little sensitive.
Adult Dean: While Cory got to caress Keisa's soft, supple hand, I was stuck next to someone who looked like he'd been at Lincoln's memorial.
Dean: [to himself] Be strong. It'll be over soon.
Pastor: Let us all rise and sing the Negro National Anthem. [organ playing "Lift Every Voice And Sing"] You gotta be kidding me.
Adult Dean: Ugh! Why did songs about oppression have to be so long?

Quote from Green Eyed Monster

Adult Dean: I could see that Kim didn't want to show how scared she was. She wanted to impress Kwame and everybody there.
Dean: [coughing] Kim... [coughs] ... I have to go home. I forgot my medicine. [coughs]
Kim: Oh. Yeah. Dean needs his medicine for...
Dean: For... For my asthma.
Kim: Right. You have that asthma.
Kwame: Man, I told you not to bring the little sissy in the first place.
Dean: Hey, I'm not a si...
Kim: He is not a sissy. He was brave enough to come here. Now, are you gonna drive us home or what? [off Kwame's look] Forget it. Don't. We'll walk. Come on, Dean.
[After Kim and Dean walk out, Dean walks back to the room]
Dean: Hey! His real name... is Albert.

Quote from The Workplace

Lillian: It says here you're gonna get a master's degree like me.
Dean: "Give out before you give up."
Adult Dean: My mom's words stuck with me. I taught the same thing to my kids. That look on Mama's face was like the look Daddy had when he'd heard I picked sax as my instrument for band.
Dean: Oh, and, sorry. I was playing with one of those balloons you put in there for Bruce.
Lillian: Balloons? In the little packets?
Dean: Yeah, it was hard to blow up at first, but then I finally got it. Then it popped.
Lillian: A-All right, go eat your breakfast.

Quote from Be Prepared

Norman: Dean, where you been, man? We ran into these Pixie Scouts, and they were really nice.
Hampton: Yeah.
Cory: One of them didn't have nobody to talk to, so I told her about you. She wanted to meet you. She was wearing a two-piece. [chuckles]
Coach Long: All right, it's getting late, men. Let's go ahead and head back to the campsite.
Dean: But I didn't get a chance to swim!
Adult Dean: I don't think I've ever been so angry at my dad. I knew I shouldn't let it out, but I couldn't help myself, so I turned to him and summoned up all the 12-year-old eloquence I could muster.
Dean: This stinks! You stink! You ruined this trip for me because you don't know what you're doing! You shoulda just let Coach Long be the leader!
Adult Dean: I stood there, waiting for my dad to whoop me for being so fresh or drown me in the lake... Wait a minute. Nobody brought that hatchet, did they? There's no telling what this man might do. [Bill is silent] But he did nothing.
Bill: Coach Long is right. It'll be dark soon. We should head on back. You lead the way, Cliff.

Quote from Home for Christmas

Bruce: Dad, can I borrow your car to run some errands?
Dean: Oh, uh, I'll go with you.
Lillian: You like running errands now?
Dean: Oh, you know me. I just love 'em.
Adult Dean: Of course I didn't, but I had to be careful what I said to my parents. The last thing I wanted was to tip them off that something was wrong with Bruce.
Dean: [shouts] He's got a knife! [normal voice] Which he's using to butter his biscuit.
Adult Dean: Or wrong with me.
