‘Stan's Return’

Season 1, Episode 11 -  Aired November 30, 1985

Dorothy considers getting back with Stan after he reveals that his younger wife has left him.

Quote from Dorothy

Dorothy: You just want us to get right back together again? Just like that? I mean, Stan, we're divorced. Stan, you walked out on me. You left me for another woman.
Stan: Look, Dorothy, I realize I may be rushing things. But think about it. We had 38 years together. A lot of it was good. I can't believe one stupid mistake on my part could undo all of that.
Dorothy: Well, believe it. It was one hell of a stupid mistake.
Stan: Was I the first guy to ever go through a mid-life crisis and react that way?
Dorothy: Probably not. But you were the first one I was married to.
Stan: Dorothy, Dorothy, hear me out. I know what you're thinking. That last night really didn't mean anything. But you're wrong. The fact that it happened at all proves that there's still something between us. And now we've got a chance to start all over. We could take that cruise we always talked about. We could look into that antique shop you always wanted to open. We could stop the sale of that property and build the home we always dreamed of. There are so many things that we can do together. So many things you can't do alone. Don't answer me right now. Just think about it, please? Please don't close the door on the rest of our lives. I love you, Dorothy. Took me awhile to realize I always have.

Quote from Sophia

Sophia: [to Dorothy] You shouldn't take him back! It's not just my opinion. We took a vote.

Quote from Dorothy

Dorothy: Hey, what are you two doing up?
Blanche: Waiting for you.
Rose: We thought you might want to talk.
Blanche: All the food's already on the table. We didn't want to waste precious time.
Dorothy: Thank you. So, what do you want to talk about? All right, I have not decided what to do about Stan.
I mean, how can I just forget all the time that we had together? And then how can I forget the pain and the hatred that I felt when he left me? I I can never trust him again. If you can't trust your husband, what kind of a relationship can it be?
Blanche: Sounds like you've already made up your mind.
Dorothy: I guess I have. Yeah, I just didn't know it until just now.

Quote from Dorothy

Stan: I ordered up some refreshments.
Dorothy: Oh.
Stan: After all, this calls for a celebration.
Dorothy: Oh, what are we celebrating? The fact that you got free champagne with your room?
Stan: We are celebrating what you said on the phone.
Dorothy: Oh, what did I say?
Stan: You said, [seductively] "Stanley, Stanley, could I come to your hotel room? I have to see you."
Dorothy: Mmm, no, that's not what I said. I said, [flatly] "Stanley, Stanley, could I come to your hotel room? I have to see you."
Stan: Exactly.

Quote from Dorothy

Stan: Chrissy, something happened here in Miami. Something that changed the way I feel.
Dorothy: Listen, Stanley. You know, before you-
Stan: Don't be embarrassed. Chrissy deserves to hear the truth. It's all over between us, Chrissy. [hugging Dorothy] This is the woman I love. Seeing Dorothy again made me realize how superficial my relationship with you really was. Sure, the sex was great. Terrific, actually. But it's OK with Dorothy, too. And with Dorothy, there is so much more. I'm sorry, Chrissy. There's nothing left for us. The fact is, there wasn't that much there to begin with. [Chrissy throws the drink in Stan's face] She never could hold her liquor.
Dorothy: Uh, Stan, did you really mean what you said about there not being that much between you and Chrissy?
Stan: That's right.
Dorothy: I'm glad, because now I don't feel so guilty.
Stan: What are you talking about?
Dorothy: Stanley, I don't feel the same way about us as you do.
Stan: You're kidding.
Dorothy: No. You know, what happened the other night brought back lovely memories, but I'm not the same woman you walked out on two years ago. I mean, my whole life has changed and quite frankly, I like the way it is. The fact that I'm on my own now-
Stan: My God, Dorothy. Are you saying you won't take me back?
Dorothy: Well, we could never have things the way we used to have, Stan. You see-
Stan: You're telling me that you're not gonna take me back?
Dorothy: Yes, Stanley, that's right.
Stan: Let me get this straight, you're definitely not gonna take me back?
Dorothy: Look, Stanley, I'm sorry-
Stan: Dorothy, I'd like to hear the rest of this, but I've got to get down to the lobby and grab Chrissy before somebody else does. Hey, terrific sex is better than nothing. [exits]
Dorothy: [to herself] Here's to terrific sex. And the dumb blonde who's not gonna get any.
