When Rose's sister, Lily, who has recently lost her sight visits Miami, Rose can't help trying to do everything for her.

Quote from Sophia

Woman: How much?
Sophia: Two bucks. Get wild, treat yourself.
Woman: Nah, I'll give you a dollar fifty.
Sophia: What does this look like, Baghdad? Get the hell out of here!
Dorothy: Ma, that's no way to sell things!
Sophia: Hey, go to Neiman Marcus sometime, see if they treat you any better.

Quote from Sophia

Blanche: Here we are. A nice, fresh pitcher of ice-cold lemonade.
Sophia: Pour me a cup, would you? I'm sweating like a horse.

Quote from Rose

Lily: Here, Sophia, let me get it for you.
Rose: That's OK, honey. I'll do it.
Lily: No, now, Rose, please. I told you when I first arrived I didn't want any special treatment.
Rose: I'm sorry.
Lily: It's been nearly six months now since I lost my sight. And I've learned to cope with just about anything.

Quote from Rose

Dorothy: Is everyone all right?
Rose: Oh, everyone's fine. We just had a little accident.
Blanche: Well, we didn't have a little accident. Lily had a little accident.
Rose: Blanche, please.
Lily: I'm sorry. I guess I'm not used to your stove.
Blanche: Well, maybe you shouldn't have been cooking on it, darling. Somebody could've gotten hurt.
Lily: I said I was sorry. It was an accident. Let's be fair. It could've happened to any one of you.

Quote from Dorothy

Dorothy: Rose, Lily can't go on like this. You have to do something.
Rose: Well, I think you girls are overreacting. I mean, it was just a little grease fire. No harm done.
Blanche: This time! What if nobody'd been home?
Dorothy: Rose, it's not just the fire.
Rose: What do you expect me to do?
Dorothy: There's nothing you can do, Rose. She has to learn to do things for herself.
Blanche: Honey, maybe she ought to go back to that school.
Rose: Well, you heard her. It's not for her. She's a very independent person.
Dorothy: No, she's not, Rose. Not till she learns to be independent as a blind person.

Quote from Rose

Rose: Don't change the subject on me, Lily. Honey, I'm worried about you.
Lily: Oh, Rose. You'd be worried if you couldn't find anything to worry about. And stop pouting. I was only teasing.
Rose: How did you know I was pouting?
Lily: You always pout when I tease you.
Rose: Always?
Lily: Always. You're a pouter, Rose. A pouter and a worrier.

Quote from Rose

Rose: Well, maybe you're right. But I think I have a good reason to be worried this time. Lily, I think you're trying to do too much by yourself.
Lily: I've never been one to depend on other people, Rose. You know that.
Rose: But this is different. You're not trying out for the track team in high school. You're trying to learn to cope with daily life as a blind person.
Lily: Do you see this dress, Rose? It's my favorite.
Rose: It's awfully pretty.
Lily: It's my favorite because it's the only one I can clearly remember. I remember what it looks like. And I remember what it looks like on me. And because of that, I wear it all the time.
Rose: You will adjust, Lily.
Lily: I don't want to adjust! I want to be the person that I used to be!
Rose: But you have to face the truth. You need help! Now, you can deal with it, but you can't do it all by yourself.
Lily: Rose, all my life I've done everything I wanted to do. Nothing's ever stood in my way before. For the past six months, that's how I've been trying to deal with everything. I thought that I could overcome this thing by myself. I guess that deep down inside, I thought I could make it go away. But I can't. Every morning when I wake up, it's still there. And that terrifies me. Rose, I do need your help. That's why I came to Miami. To ask you to come home with me. Oh, Rose, please come home with me! I can't make it by myself.

Quote from Dorothy

Blanche: Oh, girls, listen. Let's face it, all that so-called junk out there has too many fond memories for all of us. We're never gonna be able to part with it.
Dorothy: We might just as well call this whole garage sale off.
Rose: And kiss our new TV goodbye. Isn't that right, Mr. Longfellow? [high-pitched] Yes, it is, Rose.
Dorothy: Please!

Quote from Rose

Lily: Oh, Rose, I really appreciate what you're doing for me. I really do.
Rose: Don't mention it.
Lily: Could you please get me a glass of water?
Rose: Sure. Lily, you've been here a week now. You know where the kitchen is.
Lily: Well, I figured the way I've been crashing into everything, you'd rather get it.
Rose: Maybe you should get your drink of water yourself.
Lily: I thought you said you'd look after me, Rose.
Rose: Lily, if you can't even get yourself a drink of water, you're helpless. And that scares me.
Lily: How do you think I feel?
Rose: Well, I think you're scared too, but you won't admit that you need help. Professional help to get on with your life. Oh, I've given this a lot of thought, Lily, and I really think it's the best way.
Lily: Rose, you're not coming back to Chicago with me, are you?
Rose: No.
Lily: How can you turn your back on your own sister?
Rose: I'm not turning my back on you. I love you. I'm just trying to do what I think is best for you.
Lily: What you think is best? What do you know about being blind?
Rose: Oh, Lily, this is very painful for me. Please don't make it any harder than it already is.
Lily: I'm sorry, Rose. I'm sorry. I promise, I won't ever ask you for anything again.

Quote from Rose

Rose: All right, I'll see you in a week. Now, I'll call myself collect tonight and you'll tell them I'm not home and that way you'll know I arrived safely and you won't have to lie to the phone company.
