Season 2, Episode 5 - Aired July 25, 2003

The Captain's wife, Karen (Glenne Headly), asks him to investigate the death of the world's oldest man, 115-year-old Miles Hollings, about whom she made a documentary. Meanwhile, his martial difficulties lead Stottlemeyer to stay with Monk.

Quote from Adrian Monk

Dennis Gammill: Oh, th-this is insane. F-First you accuse me of a five-year-old hit-and-run. Now, I gather, you're saying I killed some security guard. Well, make up your mind, boys, which is it?
Adrian Monk: Both, actually. Mr. Mayor, uh, we... We would like your permission to dig up the time capsule.
Mayor Steven Rudner: Dig up the what?
Adrian Monk: The- The time capsule that you buried five years ago. We need to take a look inside.
Dennis Gammill: Oh, Jesus. Why? What, first the old man, now the time capsule? What? Y-You plan on diggin' up the whole county? Steve, they don't have the authority.
Mayor Steven Rudner: That's true. But I do. They were right about Miles Holling being murdered. I'm inclined to give them the benefit of the doubt.
Adrian Monk: Thank you, Mr. Mayor.
Captain Stottlemeyer: Thank you.

Quote from Adrian Monk

Adrian Monk: First, we're gonna prove that you killed George Rowe to get his security pass.
Dennis Gammill: His security pass?
Adrian Monk: You needed it to get into the nursing home, in order to kill Miles Holling.
Dennis Gammill: Steve.
Mayor Steven Rudner: No, no, no. Care to tell me why?
Adrian Monk: Because of something you said, Mr. Mayor, five years ago. It was in Karen Stottlemeyer's movie, which which I thoroughly enjoyed, by the way.
Captain Stottlemeyer: Yeah. Me too. I watched the whole thing.
Adrian Monk: When you buried the capsule, you made a promise to Miles Holling. Remember? You said that if he lived another five years, that you'd dig it up again, so that he could add a final chapter to his autobiography.
Mayor Steven Rudner: That's right. I did.
Adrian Monk: If Miles turned 115, they would have dug it up. And in your paranoia, you couldn't risk that happening, could you? So you tried to scare the old man to death. Late night phone calls, death threats. When that didn't work, you realized you had no choice. You had to kill him. There's something in there. Something you thought no one would see for 100 years.
[flashback:]
Mayor Steven Rudner: I've written a letter to future generations, and I've asked my family and staff to do the same. Why don't we drop them in now?
[present:]
Adrian Monk: The mayor invited his family and staff members to add a personal note. Let's take a look at what Mr. Gammill wrote. Captain? Would you mind reading it?
Captain Stottlemeyer: "On December 2, 1998, I killed Darren Leveroni with my car. May God forgive me, because I will never forgive myself. Signed, Dennis Gammill." The urge to confess.
Adrian Monk: It's a cop's best friend.

Quote from Captain Stottlemeyer

Captain Stottlemeyer: Did you write that?
Karen Stottlemeyer: Well. You weren't supposed to read it. At least, not for 100 years.
Captain Stottlemeyer: Is it about me?
Karen Stottlemeyer: What do you think?
Captain Stottlemeyer: Did you really like my movie?
Karen Stottlemeyer: Yeah.
Captain Stottlemeyer: Two thumbs up. Though I'm not an objective critic. Because I'm insanely in love with the filmmaker.

Quote from Adrian Monk

Captain Stottlemeyer: Monk. Looks like you're on your own again.
Adrian Monk: Glad to hear it.
Karen Stottlemeyer: Thank you for looking after him. And-And thank you.
Sharona: You're welcome.
Adrian Monk: It was my pleasure.
Sharona: No, it wasn't.
Adrian Monk: No, it wasn't. I took the liberty of packin' up your things, puttin' them in your car.
Captain Stottlemeyer: Let's not do this again real soon, okay?
Adrian Monk: You got it.
