Ross Geller: We Were on a Break! Page 1 of 2
When Ross and Rachel argued over her relationship with her colleague Mark, Rachel decided they need to take a break from each other. Fresh from the quarrel and convinced Rachel was about to sleep with Mark, Ross ran into Chloe, the attractive woman from the copy place. The next morning, after Ross and Chloe slept together, Rachel called Ross to say there was nothing between her and Mark.
After Rachel found out about the one-night stand, Ross argued there was no relationship to damage as they had broken up, but Rachel insisted they were on a break. In the many arguments to follow, Ross would defend his actions by saying, "We were on a break!"

Rachel: But he has to know how I feel.
Guy on the Plane: But why? He loves this, this Emily person. No good can come of this.
Rachel: Well, I think you're wrong.
Guy on the Plane: Oh, no. [bites his fist] And by the way, it seems to be perfectly clear that you were on a break.
[Rachel gasps]

Ross: Yeah, you're right.
Carol: Phoebe, hang on. Ross wants to say something. What? You slept with someone else?
Ross: We were on a break!
