Ross: We Were on a Break!
When Ross and Rachel argued over her relationship with her colleague Mark, Rachel decided they need to take a break from each other. Fresh from the quarrel and convinced Rachel was about to sleep with Mark, Ross ran into Chloe, the attractive woman from the copy place. The next morning, after Ross and Chloe slept together, Rachel called Ross to say there was nothing between her and Mark.
After Rachel found out about the one-night stand, Ross argued there was no relationship to damage as they had broken up, but Rachel insisted they were on a break. In the many arguments to follow, Ross would defend his actions by saying, "We were on a break!"
Rachel: My mom never thought this would work out. She said, "Once a cheater, always a cheater." Oh, I just wish we hadn't lost those four months. But if time was what you needed to gain a little perspective.
Ross: We were on a break!
Ross: You got off the plane. [Ross and Rachel kiss]
Rachel: I do love you.
Ross: I love you too, and I am never letting you go again.
Rachel: Okay. 'Cause this is where I wanna be, okay? No more messing around. I don't wanna mess this up again. Okay, we're done being stupid.
Rachel: Okay. You and me, all right? This is it.
Ross: This is it. Unless we're on a break. Don't make jokes now.
Rachel: And so then I realized, all the stuff that I had been doing proposing to Joshua, lying to Ross about why I couldn't come to the wedding was all just a way-
Guy on the Plane: Oh, oh, oh, oh. I'm sorry, can I interrupt? I just want to say that you are a horrible, horrible person.
Rachel: Pardon me?
Guy on the Plane: You say you love this man, and yet you're about to ruin the happiest day of his life. I'm afraid I have to agree with your friend "Pheebs". This is a terrible, terrible plan.
Rachel: But he has to know how I feel.
Guy on the Plane: But why? He loves this, this Emily person. No good can come of this.
Rachel: Well, I think you're wrong.
Guy on the Plane: Oh, no. [bites his fist] And by the way, it seems to be perfectly clear that you were on a break.
Carol: Phoebe, hang on a second. Take my car. Get your friends.
Ross: No, I won't pick them up.
Carol: Listen, we both know you'll do it, because you're not a jerk. Okay. So you can either sulk here for half an hour and then go pick them up, or save us both time and sulk in the car.
Ross: Rachel doesn't want me-
Carol: I'm sorry Rachel dumped you for Mark and you're the innocent victim in all of this. But don't punish your friends for what Rachel did.
Ross: Yeah, you're right.
Carol: Phoebe, hang on. Ross wants to say something. What? You slept with someone else?
Ross: We were on a break!
Ross: She wants me to take responsibility for everything that went wrong in our relationship. I mean, she even goes on for five pages about how I was unfaithful to her. We were on a break!
Chandler: Oh, my God. If you say that one more time, I'm gonna break up with you.
Rachel: Honey, this is not your fault. Just because you guys had a fight does not justify her sleeping with someone.
Ross: Well, if she thought they were on a break...
Rachel: Oh, I am so mad, Ross. I don't think I've ever been this angry.
Ross: What about the time I said we were on a break?
Rachel: Ben, you know, when you were a baby we'd hang out all the time. Because I was your daddy's girlfriend.
Ben: But you're not anymore.
Rachel: No, I'm not.
Ben: Because you guys were on a break.
Rachel: Hey, we were not on a-
Phoebe: That's it? You call that a fight? Come on. "We were on a break!" "No we weren't!" What happened to you two?
Monica: Wow, he's really not letting this go, is he?
Rachel: God, how long do you think that's gonna last?
Phoebe: Well, I don't know. He got over the "We were on a break" thing really quickly.
Ross: You're welcome.
Rachel: I'm sorry. Were you speaking to me, or sleeping with someone else?
Ross: We were on a break!
Rachel: You know, Ross, why don't you just put that on your answering machine?
Rachel: I cannot keep having this same fight over and over again, Ross. No, you're making this too hard.
Ross: I'm making this too hard? What do you want me to do?
Rachel: I don't know. I don't know. Look, ugh, maybe we should just take a break.
Ross: Okay, okay, fine. You're right. Let's, uh, let's take a break. Let's cool off, okay? Let's get some frozen yogurt or something.
Rachel: No. A break from us.
Rachel: And yet she was worth jeopardizing our relationship.
Ross: Look, I didn't think there was a relationship to jeopardize. I thought we had broken up.
Rachel: We were on a break.
Ross: That, for all I knew, could last forever. That to me is a breakup.
Rachel: You think you're gonna get out of this on a technicality?
Ross: I'm not trying to "get out" of anything. I thought our relationship was dead.
Rachel: Well, you sure had a hell of a time at the wake.
Joey: Anyway, her and Ross just started yelling at each other.
Phoebe: Wait. Why was he yelling at her? He's the one who slept with someone else.
Joey: Well, I guess he says that because they were on a break when it happened she should've forgiven him by now.
Phoebe: Oh, he is so unreasonable. God. Although I think understand what he means. Oh, my God. This is like 60 Minutes ... okay, you know, when at first you're really mad at that pharmaceutical company for making the drug. And then, you just feel bad for the people, because they needed to make their hair grow.
Ross: This is fun! Oh, hey, Rach. Remember that "we were on a break" thing? I'm sorry. Will you marry me?
Chandler: That's not funny at all.
Ross: And that's why, no matter what Mommy says we really were on a break. Yes, we were. Yes, we were.
