‘Work Family’
Season 1, Episode 8 - Aired February 15, 2022
Janine is upset when Jacob tells her they're just "work friends". Meanwhile, Gregory's businesslike teaching style is leaving the kids bored.
Quote from Janine
Barbara: Oh, you look a m... Wait a minute. [sniffs] What is that smell?
Melissa: Is that...
[aside to camera:]
Janine: Danny Wok's makes the best chicken in all of Philly. I don't know what Danny puts in that chicken, but it woks. [laughs]
[back:]
Barbara: Mmm, that was very thoughtful of you.
Janine: Oh, oh, oh, oh! If you want the "Wok"... [thunder crashes] you gotta talk.
Quote from Ava
Barbara: Janine, sweetheart, you have only dated one man your entire life?
Janine: Yeah.
Melissa: No women? Nobody else, ever?
Barbara: That just answers so many things. I mean...
Ava: [laughs] Somebody get me a chair. [sits down, laughs, falls off chair]
Melissa: Is... Is the guy rich?
Janine: No, not monetarily. He's an aspiring musician.
Ava: So he broke? [laughs] Somebody get me a fresh chair.
Quote from Jacob
Janine: Look, you don't know Tariq. He's sweet. He's caring. He's ambitious. Jacob knows.
Jacob: Oh, I've... [mouth full] He's very spirited.
Janine: Spirited? I could use a little bit more help than that, Jacob.
Jacob: You know, he's... confident. And, um, he's a real extemporaneous thinker.
Barbara: Hmm!
Jacob: I-I'm still getting to know him, I guess.
Janine: Et tu, work friend? You were beat with him this morning. Did that mean nothing?
Quote from Gregory
Gregory: Hold on. You're gonna get drenched.
Janine: Thanks.
Gregory: You okay?
Janine: Yeah, are they still in there making fun of me?
Gregory: It's only been a few seconds, so, yeah, probably. Look, you can't care about what other people think about your choices 'cause, at the end of the day, you're the one who got to live with them. My dad doesn't want me to be a teacher.
Janine: What? But teaching's the best job in the world.
Gregory: Well, Lieutenant Colonel Martin Eddie doesn't see it that way. But it shouldn't matter what he thinks, right? It should be about what makes me happy?
Janine: Does teaching make you happy?
Gregory: It could. Does Tariq make you happy?
Quote from Jacob
Jacob: Oh. Okay, wow.
Janine: Gregory dances.
Jacob: I don't think I've ever seen him experience... joy before. It's... weird.
Quote from Ava
Tariq: Hey, uh, hold on, hold on, hold on. I-I want to do a quick shout-out. Shout-out to a very special person and the... and the whole reason that I'm here. This woman is my everything, my ride or die since day one.
Ava: [to Barbara] He means that literally, like out the womb.
Quote from Jacob
Janine: So, um, tell me, as a friend, what do you really think of Tariq?
Jacob: I had an ex back home that I was certain I would be with forever.
Janine: What happened?
Jacob: I realized I outgrew him. You know, it was no one's fault. But I realized I couldn't be the best Jacob I could be.
Janine: Was it hard to let go?
Jacob: Extremely. But if I hadn't, I wouldn't have met Zach.
Janine: Ah, yes, Zach, boyfriend of two years that I knew nothing about. [chuckles]
Jacob: He's 5'9". He loves dogs. He spells his name with a "ch."
Janine: All right, well, that's a start. I'd love to meet him one day. Unless, you know, we're not there yet.
Jacob: I'll bring him around. Hey, whatever you do, you should know that I love and support you as a friend. And, most importantly, maybe give yourself a chance to be the best Janine you can be.
Quote from Gregory
Gregory: Okay, this is gonna be on your assessment, so let's focus. If there are 12 bikes and Riley buys 4, how many bikes are left in the store? [hands go up]
Boy: Why does Riley need so many bikes?
Gregory: That is a good question. For his friends.
Boy: Is he in a bicycle gang?
Gregory: Yes.
Boy: Then there's 8 bikes left.
Gregory: That's correct.
Boy: Can you do the dance?
Gregory: What did I say? [boy shrugs his shoulders] You get this right, then we dancin'. Come on, y'all. Get up with it.
